Any IT guys out there? HELP REQUESTED
« on: June 13, 2005, 06:19:01 AM »

I built a 2 PC network, one dual xeon one athalon, to work with my DA7 desk. The xeon is the main PC running Nuendo 3 and the athalon is running GigaStudio 3 and all of my VST instruments, including my Discrete Drums Libraries. The goal was to be able to assemble performances on any of these instruments or libraries and then fly the completed performance into my Nuendo project, thus keeping the xeon "Clutter Free (kind of like building a cabinet in a workshop out back and then bring this new furniture into the house)."

But my network isn't and I don't know why.

Matching IP and Subnet mask addresses? Check.
Do the shared files have the hand symbols on the folders? Check.
Do the PC's network setups match? Check.
Are you listed as the administrator on both PC's? Check.
Can the share window of the xeon see the athalon files? Check.

I go to network places > entire network > microsoft network > shared folder group > it shows both PC's AND THAT'S AS FAR AS I CAN GO.

Whenever I select the athalon icon to access the shared files, I get a "NOT CLEARED FOR NETWORK/NETWORK PATH NOT FOUND." error message. Any ideas on how to break this impass?

ok, you see the athlonfiles on the xeon but not the other way..

right?

both are running Windows XP SP2?

did you deactivate the internal firewall of the fukin SP2?

try to install SP1.. btw. reinstall your system and just take SP1 on it..

"Matching IP addresses"... as in, the same?  They have to be different or things get rather confused.

All firewalls are off. The addresses match up to the last digit, with the 1st ending in 01 and the 2nd ending in 02.

Yes, Xeon can see Athalon but not vice versa.
I am listed as the Admin and by name in the Admin section of Admin Tools. It SAYS that I have unrestricted priviledges.

Also odd, the speed of accessing the network keeps changing on the Xeon. I can do a reboot of both machines and the hub and when I run the procedure, each step (network > microsoft network > workgroup, etc.) pops up instantly. Other times, it can take as long as 30 seconds between each of these steps. On those occasions, I KNOW it's going to give me an error/lockout message.

Don't know too much about this but just trying to help.

Is there an uplink port on your hub?

Do you have one of the computers plugged in to that?

Does it make a difference?

You could also build a crossover cable and try it without the hub.

Also it has been a while but an ethernet address cannot be 0anything or did you mean 0.1 as in 192.168.0.1  ?

If you had let's say 192.168.2.01 something is very wrong.

If it is varying in network access time...maybe reload the network card drivers?

you could also ping each IP address from the other computer with a -t and then control c to stop and it will give you a full report.  It would get you closer to isolating the problem.

ex:

ping 192.168.2.1 -t

don't forget the space.

Okay Guys, here's where we are.

The Athalon can ping the Xeon by name or ip address.

The Xeon can ping itself by name or ip address, but NOT the Athalon.

Neither of these computers is on the web or will ever be.

Both computers are connected by a brand new Lynksys Hub with brand new ethernet cables.

Both external and Windows Firewalls are TURNED OFF on both Computers.

Under "My Computer" properties, Computer Name shows the name of each computer, the correct workgroup name, and the fact that they belong to a small network with NO DOMAIN.

The Athalon shows all the shared files, including the drives of itself and the Xeon in the Network Places page.

The Xeon shows the icons for both PC's in the workgroup. But I can only enter the Xeon's icon, not the Athalon. Conversely, on the Network Places page of the Athalon I can only access the files in the Athalon. I get an error message when I try to open one of the Xeon files from the Athalon.

The problem has now been determined to be with the Xeon, since the Athalon has no problem pinging the Xeon. However when asked to view all the pc's in the workgroup, the Athalon only sees itself.

I uninstalled the Ethernet Card virtually to see if a sort of rebooting of the card would clear the blockage. No change.

I don't feel so inept anymore, since every IT person I've spoken to so far has commented on how unusual this scenario is, and nobody yet has cracked this mystery.

Any other suggestions?

I am not awake yet.  But there is no such thing as unusual with computers since it's always something different and you should never feel inept dealing with these stupid boxes.

Michael Wagener was at my studio and changed my dual monitor resolution and my Hammerfall card quit working....unbelievable...

Um so you can't rule anything out but you also have to use logic.

Are you pinging from the command prompt?

Did you swap ethernet cables?

Did you swap ports on the hub?

I would also physically swap network cards.  If a computer can ping itself but not anything else it is a high probability that it is the card.  If it is built in maybe you could install a network card from an old computer. I am slowly waking up....and I would now bet that is where your problem is...or with the cable or hub.

the problem is on the athlon, because the xeon can't ping the athlon.. this is my opinion..

try to remove the hub first.. then connect both PC's with a direct cable.. try again..

check the policies for your shared folder on the athlon..

your problem sounds like a firewall-prob. / policies-prob..

try with the ipconfig -release , then ipconfig -renew from your cmd  to get a new IP.. makes no sense but try it.. worked for my once..

Keyplayer: Yes. I swapped ports. Then I purchased a new hub and cables. No change.

Keyplayer: Yeah, that's where I am now. I'm going down in about an hour to move the card to a different port. If that doesn't work, I've got a new card in the box waiting to replace it. Sad

Man, I want to open that thing back up like I'd want a fork in my left eye! Mad

I don't get it. I transferred 95GB of data from an old P4 into the Xeon right after I built it. It went smooth as silk. The only thing that's changed in this equasion is now it's an Athalon connected to the hub instead of the P4. This is driving me nuts. This is the 4th day with this nonsense!
