my current drum set-up

only because I rarely have photos...

in this particular case, largely because of the room sound and shape, I actually have the overheads over head.

In most cases so far, I've used EITHER the over head 4038's OR the 2 U87's... not all 4.

I'd assume he uses an SM57 to drive nails into them.

What's the technical reasoning behind the positioning of the 4038s? "It sounds good" does not qualify as a technical reason Wink

The 4038s are in Blumlein, which sounds really nice overhead like that.  I use a tube SM69 for that sometimes, but the 4038 sounds much darker.  I can't speak for William, but I always use mine (I only have one 4038) as a room mic and compress the living shit out of it.  

My only question for William is, why didn't you put the ribbon element closer together instead of having them be at the far side of the mic.  I really curious.  I haven't had two 4038s to fuck around with, so you might be saving me some time when I do.

Speaking of recommended uses for mics, I was doing an overhaul on my Mutron Phaser the other day, and there was a dent on the front panel I needed to pound out while I had the thing taken apart.  I didn't feel like walking upstairs to the garage, so I grabbed an SM57 to pound the dent out and it worked great!  Thanks for the recommendation, guys!

Also curious, is it safe to use the Coles as overheads with a really LOUD drummer? I'm always a little cautious with ribbons and SPL...?
