Monitors advice
« on: May 03, 2005, 04:01:26 PM »

Hi,

In the last few years my home studio was a 2m X 2m space. I started with a pair of Event 20/20bas (the first set of monitors I've ever owned), but after some time I realized they were too big for that room, so I replaced them with a pair of Genelec 1029a. I found the Genelecs pretty "true", and they fit my room dimensions, yet I really missed the subs which obviously the 1029 don't have.
Last week I moved to my new space which is much bigger (3m X 4m X 3m), and I wonder if it's a good opportunity to move to "bigger" monitors (btw, I intend to hire a pro to treat the room acoustics).
These are my options:

1. Leave the 1029's and add a sub woofer (Genelec or a different brand?).
2. Leave the 1029's and add a pair of old but reliable home stereo speakers (9" woofers).
3. Ditch the 1029's and buy another monitors in the range of 1000$.

I would really like to know what you guys think.

Thanks

PS
This is my first post in this forum, so hello everyone!

If you're comfortable with the sound of the 1029's, just get a sub to fill in the missing bottom end.

And I'm glad you're here!!

Thanks guys,
I just talked to the local Genelec dealer and found out the the matching sub for the 1029 (the 1094 model) costs a fortune, and is not an option.
How do you feel about sub woofers? Can I get a non-matching, cheaper, brand?

As long as the x-over point is set to the same place, almost any decent sub should work fine.

Just be sure not to get a sub so cheap that it just plays one note all the time.

I hate when that happens...!

Tannoy makes some decent subs that are priced quite affordably....

Genelec will soon release a killer little sub, the 7050B, 3db down at 25hz, on board bass management for up to 5.1, at a retail of $1050, which is a perfect match for your 1029's. You can see it at Genelec.com.
