i saw that creative labs offers ear buds for 330.00 and I had to ask myself, what could make them worth so much money?  a decent pair of sony studio monitors can be had for about 100 bucks, so what is going on with these earbuds?

It's only if you are looking for a good headphone experience, not an alternative to a good loudspeaker/room combination (not at 100 bucks, though). The etymotics and the high end (dual driver) shures sound mighty impressive. I still prefer circumaural headphones, but for isolation the earbuds do a fantastic job and tonally the etymotics and the shures are competitive with the best circumaurals.
