Cubase SL3
« on: May 18, 2005, 09:02:28 AM »

Hey, I am looking at buying recording software. I have until now been using a really cheap program called Powertracks, which has given me decent results. I saw on this forum that you suggest Cubase SX3, which is pretty pricy. How do you feel about SL3? It is significantly cheaper....I am only recording demos of my music on my thinkpad laptop through an m-audio mobile pre, so obviously I have a low budget setup. Also, on musician's friend it says that a dvd-rom drive is required....why is this so? If you have any other suggestions as far as what software to get please provide. I know this doesn't really belong here, but I'll throw it in... Would it be good for me to get a decent mixer and go out of the mixer into the m-audio mobile pre for my recordings? Thanks for any help you can give.....

The program comes on DVD.

If you don't need surround, then SL should be fine.

Any more takers?

Check out Cakewalk Home Studio 2.. it's Sonar's little brother, much ignored but remarkably capable.. same quality audio engine, dx & vst plugin support, unlimited audio tracks, strong midi sequencing, etc... works for me, haven't felt the need to jump up to Sonar yet.

And it's cheap as hell, especially if you're a student.  I think the academic version goes for $70 at www.studica.com.  Regular price is $100.

Unless you're looking to spend some cash, I don't think buying a mixer will improve your sound much over going straight in through the mobile pre.  So save your cash and get a better microphone, or save up for monitors.
