Mic's and pre's for RTA
« on: May 08, 2005, 12:40:18 PM »

In order to improve accuracy when doing RTA, I'm considering an Earthworks M30 mic matched to an Earthworks 1021 mic pre. This combo would run roughly US$1800.00. Do any of you veteran RTA'ers consider this a good combination and/or value? Or do you know of some other combo that represents an outstanding value? Perhaps a standalone RTA device?

fwiw, I already have software for this purpose I really like and a fair A/D.

Thanks in advance for any replies,

Paul

When we do RTA or FFT analysis in a room for a live PA setup, we'll use an Earthworks QTC-1 omni measurment mic.  Look for the most transparent mic pre you can get your hands on.  Preferably something with a higher bandwidth as the QTC-1 can hear signals upto 40KHz.  The earthworks pre is a decent choice.

Thanks, Nathan. The Earthworks stuff is a bit spendy but it's hard to argue with the bandwidth, huh? And those response charts...flat, flat, flat! Smile

I'm guessing you've already checked them out (cheap they ain't), but Bruel + Kjaer tend to be an industry-standard amongst acousticians (how d'you format an umlaat on the "u"?): http://www.bkhome.com/bk_home.asp

It looks as if you have to sign in to get the data on the mics though...
