What's the standard for Hi Def?
« on: May 06, 2005, 08:10:41 AM »

Is Hi Def 48k or 96K, or are there different standards for broadcast vrs printed (DVD-V, DVD-A, SACD, etc.)? The reason I'm asking is because I just read the latest issue of Surround Professional and there was an article the Grammy Show and the different mixing engineers. One was using a DM2K, another was using a pair of them, and the last was using a Sony Oxford (He was doing the Mono, Stereo and Pro Logic 2 Mixes).

Since the Sony won't go past 48K, it made me wonder what the official breakdown is on this stuff. Confused

Broadcast is 48k. I wouldn't look for that to change for a long long time.

This is a strange question. What is Hi Def for you?

A good mix on a analog board converted with a good AD converter in 48 k may sound better than a mix with 96k on a DM2000.

Or a the same mix on an old digital StageTec Cantus in 48k could sound better than on the new DM2000 in 96k. .....

Keyplayer: The quality of the mix is irrelivant to my question. I'm just asking about required delivery formats.

Anything for video/television needs to be at 48k.
Every VTR, video server, editing system, etc. that I know of runs at 48k.
