Fletcher's Crapola List?
« on: April 26, 2005, 10:32:19 AM »

I admire people with strong opinions about audio gear and esp. appreciate it when they tell the truth about the crap that's being sold to people.

I dunno if Fletcher has posted a "Shit List" or not, but it sure is a good idea. Of course there is nothing from stopping others from adding their experiences with, and, opinions about, terrible audio gear. Who has not made a mistake buying a total POS once or twice?

So would the Fock-Us-All LC be at the top of Fletcher's Shit List?

As much as this could be an interesting read; who the fuck cares what's on someones shit list? Fridmann does shit with crap that sounds great. Sometimes it takes a knife, a gun or a rock to kill a rabbit, none of them rule 100% of the time.

I actually like reading about vinyl cutters who hated the Fairchild ; why? Because now I feel like it's not necessary to complete my list.

I despise Tele Elam 251s.

Oh, I dunno, I thought we could also have some fun with it.

I suppose gear you've had to fight with or wasted money on can bring back some painful memories, but sometimes we can laugh at our dumb mistakes too. And sometimes it's just plain fun to cut through all the marketing hoopla.

YMMV.

TC Helicon VoiceWorks

...sat in the rack for a year unused, except for playing around with the synthetic harmonies for a laugh while waiting for the vocalist to show up to the session. Everyone enjoys sounding like a chipmonk, a barbershop quartet or Darth Vader!!! Smile

Yeah, I've always wondered why people shit on U87s, I've been lucky with mine, IMO (and other engineers who've heard it) none compare.

Is it an early model, is it modified? I've been lucky with mine too, I have a 70's model that is just fine but does need a kick from the pre.

Back on topic, The worse POS I purcahsed in the last 10 years was an Antares Autotune hardware POS. It is still in the studio but in a place no one can acccess it Very Happy If someone asshole saw it, it would be "you can fix that guitar chord, right?"

Capsule done by the late genius, and it's an ancient one with the Tuchel.

OK I'll add some shit that I regret that's still in the rack.

My MXR Mini Limiters.

They are noisy, lo-fi, unbalanced, have a PITA control on the back and when all fails make shit bite like a hungry bitch on a chicken binge. Damn that was positive again.

That question about Autotune being used to fix a busted guitar chord brought to mind handing the questioner a hot soldering iron. That picture made me laugh.

My U87 was brand new.

I tried it on everyone's voice in my last five projects.  It was a decent drum mic but the Micro-Tech Gefell stuff just blew it away at every turn.  It sounded mushy.  I tried it through a Spider, a Vipre, an RNP, an Amek, Yamaha PM2000....maybe because I was comparing it to a MG Phantom and a M930...

The entire spectrum seemed to be there and very clean but somewhere in the high mids??...not sure...mush-eee...

The band dudes heard it as well and some studio guys that came by.

Maybe it was a bad one.

Another POS:

My DAW.

It works flawlessly, I use a new hard drive for every project and you can edit effortlessly and sounds great, but I have a Studer A80 and the sound is bigger and it just seems to be more musical.  I think when you come out of the DAW and use outboard gear the sound reacts differently than when it comes off the tape.  But I am a newbie and a dumbass so.....

And this may be crazy but when I tell the guys that the tape is rolling they lay down better takes than when it is 75GB later on take 56 ITB.

And my biggest regret about having a DAW is watching the music having the life drained out of it with the MIDI click track.

And...sorry...you sit there and watch the music on the monitor....and it comes naturally to me...hate it...

I have an MXR Dual Limiter and love it - wish I had three more of em (I wonder how closeley related it is to the Mini Limiter).

As for the crapola list I'd throw in the Focusrite Platinum series. Useless and crappy (in my opinion).

What's "good" and what's "crap" is all subjective. I know Fletcher is no fan of Universal Audio, but personally I love their gear. It's a matter of personal preference.

Not much in common at all IMO, except for the noise.
