How would you use this space?
« on: April 19, 2005, 12:15:32 PM »

I've just purchased a new property which includes a newly built 'shop' which I will be using as a recording space.  The construction is concrete slab, 2x6, stucco exterior with tile roof. 40'W x 50'L x 20'H (to peak of open rafters, est 15' at the corners).  Currently completely unfinished inside, but plenty of power and separate circuits and plumbed for bath, etc.  I'm considering building just a control room to allow for versatility in the recording space, but am also considering treating the space more like a 'sound stage' for possible video shoots, etc.  It's in the Sonoran foothills just north of Phoenix and since this is a commercial endeavor I would be interested in the specific needs of this market, however I'm most interested in how you would treat this 'blank canvas' if it were yours.  Thanks.index.php/fa/987/0/

That's a pretty usable size, IMO.

My first inclination would be to carve out about 1/3 for "control room" space - or "speaker listening" if you will.

I like about 650 sq ft or so.  My room now is 485 and it's tolerable but on the small side.

I like the idea of putting the CR in one of the corners, with the listening position back-to-the-corner, bisecting the right angle there.

That leaves a sort of "L" shaped recording space, which could be pretty nice with minimal finishing.

What's the ambient noise level like?  That's a major factor in deciding on wall treatments in the tracking area.

If you have the extra dough and want a serious recording studio, hiring a studio architect can save you tons of headaches and possible hidden costs to fix things down the road.  Brett Thoeny of Boto Design has done a number of residential facilities, including mine and Clearmoutain's place.  I highly recommend him.  There are a number of other great guys, too.  But trying to improvise this type of thing can really turn out to be trial and terror if you don't get an architect.

The budget isn't there (yet) for a full blown designer/buildout.  That's why I'm considering a 'less is more' approach without permanent walls.  I'm also considering alternative building methods like 'ReddiForm' large movable wall sized gobos, etc.  Usually the problem is the opposite.. not enough space; but I'm finding that exploring the options an interesting proposition.  Thanks for the designer lead.

JW - Not a bad drive from LA.  Hit the I-10 crank your latest mixes, 5-6 hours.  As for the business, live sound is boomin in the winter (resorts, corporates, etc.) through mid April (AZ Bike Week).  Summer turns the focus to recording (indoor activities) and the local/regional acts.  System design and installation is stable as this area is growing like mad.

Don't worry Randy - LA roots run deep after 16 years.

OTOH, my son will be happy anywhere they can play baseball year round.
