I'm pretty sure it's stage left (or drummer's perspective left).  And yeah, does it matter?  The hihats are even in both mics and there are only two toms...

drummer's perspective.  it only matters to help save time when dealing with tracks.

i hate trying to figure it out when overheads were tracked as evenly as these are.

sorry!!!

Unless the drummer had the high-hat between his legs, why WOULD the HH be centred in overheads?
SHOULDN'T it be in perspective?

I do think it's interesting that the overheads are 2 different mics. I've never considered that, always gone for 2 of the same. Pretty cool. Are these micing configurations similar to what you usually go for J? (do you usually use the monos and room mics in your mixes?). Just curious. Thanks for posting these. It's neat to be able to see the thought processes of other folks. Wish there was more of this

The thought process was something along the lines of "well, the other Neumann is toast... what else do we have laying around?"

There's usually a mic on each drum, with stereo OHs.  A mono OH may get thrown in the mix on occasion.  Room mic selection and placement are "anything goes".  Nothing groundbreaking or radical, although there is a lot of listening prior to hitting "Record".

"the other Neumann is toast" don't want to hear that too often. drums sound great. Never had the chance to try out the 88 on snare, read a lot about it so nice to get a chance to hear it

this man knows my tracking habits better then i do.  he's assisted me for close to 4 years now, and i hardly say anything at this point.

mics get put up i wait till he gives me the nod then i start bringing things up.  he moves mics until i'm happy or switches them out and starts over.

we usually only discuss overheads (mic selection and placement) and romm mics.

this particular set up was all his, i did nothing but help get the stuff up and placed that he wanted.

from there i spent my usual 2 to 3 hours of listening, moving, changing, compressing, EQ'ing.......before we actually started printing takes.

only one mic was swapped out, and that was the stedman for a toast U87 that wasn't passing signal at all.

this session was unusual in the sense that we didn't use my earthworks, i'm sure takeout has grown tired of putting those things up.

Not at all.  I just like trying new things.

Scott -

Additionally, since the drum kit is an asymmetrical set-up, non-matched mics almost make more sense; you can tailor left vs. right a lot more.  It makes things more complicated initially, but not in the extreme.
