If one likes the euphonic distortions of vinyl, and the convenience of CD, one could of course make a CD using the LP as source.  All the noise would remain intact.   Wink

Glenn Meadows had a post years ago about adding unmodulated groove noise to a digital source. Said he fooled pretty much everyone with it.

I have to do that more ofthen than I would like to. And people still buy that.

David K,

Yep, I knew him. Why don't you tell us about him.

It´s been bugging me lately. I can´t understand why i feel vinyl sounds so great. It´s not the noice, the skips or the riia, the limited bandwidth... but for some reason i hear dynamics that really can´t be there at all. If i could make my own i would throw away all my burners right away...and Cdr is NOT even close to a pressed cd when it comes to reading/decoding. Give me a cutter that gives me 90% the durability of pressed vinyl!!!!Toby

So, little or nothing but noise above 15 kHz on most vinyl...yet you can bet that some LP-lovin' 'audiophiles' will cite the ~100 kHz frequency range of SACD as the reason it 'sounds more like vinyl'.  Rolling Eyes

I think the reason vinyl sounds good has to do with elegantly lousy specs. Looking for some superior spec to explain it is misguided.

Is it just familiarity? I'm sure most people on here grew up on a steady diet of vinyl. I'm pretty young (26) but had enthusastic music fan parents. I think at 4 I learned to use the turntable! My earliest music memories are vinyl. When I hear them they sound perfect because that's what's embedded in my head.

It's like really dead drums. I don't like them... but when I hear them, it's comforting.

This is a fascinating discussion.
I'd love to hear some examples of vinyl lathes used as a buss processor.
Anybody care to post some before/after clips? I may be in the market for some 24/96->vinyl->cd mastering sometime soon!
(that 'add depth button' comment has really got me interested).....

Andy

Btw, the sgt. pepper squeal sounds like about 15-16k on my CD version.....similar to uk tv squeal.....not pleasant, but it makes me bark, woof and wag my tail for some reason.....

I had to master some shit for a famous drum n bass group (with MC).. I wasn't shure where to cut off the signal.. they told me, everything above 15kHz is bad.. well, I couldnt imagine that, but ok, I've made a lowpass at 15kHz and a highpass @40kHz and it worked well! the dynamics of an LP is not very good theoratically.. hum, I dont know, never did an A/B of this LP..

I dont know if it depends on the genre.. in drum and bass the bass is very loud, and maybe the needle is not build to get the bass and the highs at the same time..

but im uncertain @all..

The Westrex does indeed have two resonance points. All cutterheads primary resonance is at 1K.

Which is corrected by copious negative feedback, something that is anathema to a _real_ audiophile!

Was the main reason the HAECO cutterhead was built to get rid of the secondary resonance? I know it used Westrex coils.
