Laid down some mellotron last night in between sessions. I'll have a total of two hours in this thing in 5 minute intervals...

Man, I wasn't even gonna do this.....but I downloaded the drums and they sound so awesome I couldn't resist.  I did all my guitars and some keys last weekend and scratch bass/vox.  This has been a really fun exercise so far.  I'll be done soon.

BTW, what is the signal chain on the mono room mic?  Sorry if this was posted before.

"Mono Room Stedman_01"

It's probably about 70% of the drum sound I have going at the moment.  I like.

most likely it went to a fleckinger mic pre, then to an 1176, then possibly to a fleckinger EQ (maybe) then to 2" tape.

That particular track makes my attempts at micing a room sound like dung.  Well done!

i hope "takeout" sees that.  it was his mic choice (i remember questioning him about it) and it was his placement (which i remember questioning him about).

i'm glad you guys are digging the tracks cause takeout and i were thinking they were pretty rough around the edges and not up to what we consider "par"

it was our very first session in that studio and we didn't really know what to expect.

The drums do sound cool but I'm having trouble coming up with something I'm happy with.
Will try again tonight

What's the deadline on this thing again?

No kidding.  I haven't been able to get that mono overhead track (the RCA) to do anything "nice" yet.  Unless I abandon "rock" and go for something else entirely.

The Stedman placement was nothing fancy - maybe 5' away from the kit and 3' off the ground.  Important: the room is pretty small; in retrospect I might've tried something else to give the illusion of "biggerness" (mic placement or kit orientation within the room).  Glad someone found it useful.

Still not done but the doing has been a lot of fun.  Learning that drum stumble took a few shots.  Finally, I attacked the problem by being even sloppier, and it seems to have worked.  It's been downhill after that!

This exercise/contest/whatever was a great idea!  Thanks for hosting it!

Oh, and btw, I was right.

You are ALL gonna hate the vocals!

Shocked  Shocked

Guaranteed!

heh heh!

Well, this is the last time I get to check this for a week or so.  I'm sitting here in my empty apartment (98% moved out) just waiting to check out first thing tomorrow.  All I have is this stupid computer...

Like J. said, I'm done, and you guys are going to shit when I tell you how I had to record that.  Really embarrassing stuff...

My band leaves for Arizona and New Mexico on Tuesday, bright and early.  This'll be our first time leaving the state as a band.  One real show in Albuquerque (I hate trying to spell that...), and then we're doing a seminar at a middle school on an indian reservation in AZ.  Should be pretty fulfilling...

Our bass player can't leave the state because he has to get daily breath-a-lizer tests from a probation officer so we had to get this friend of ours who is WAY underqualified.  He just stands there with his feet together staring at the fretboard. The worst part is that he only knows, like, a third of our songs, and BARELY at that.  We're going to have to show him on the way down there...sheesh!

Has all the makings of a first "tour", huh?

It's been a load of fun working on this, the timing stuff was bothersome at first but now i just ignore it and slop it up as well. So far i haven't used one amp and not one signal has seen any air. Although i'm recording this at the shop it's been quickies waiting for clients to show up so i've been plugging the guitar into the GTQ2 and hitting the DAW. Everything else has been done with softsynth demos with a 2 hour limit and the settings can't be saved so it's been very guerrilla. I can't wait to hear everyone's stuff together.
