How's Your Progress on the Your Mix Contest Song?
« on: April 19, 2005, 01:49:45 AM »

I know the drums have only been posted for a day, but I was immediately inspired and have been working on it for hours...

The first thing that came to my head ended up being my central idea and it's worked like a charm.  I'm already really proud of it...

So far, I've recorded bass and a bunch of guitars.  Had to lug my 100w Marshall JMP back to my apartment from our practice space to get this done.  I've had it on "one" all night and I bet my neighbors still hate me...

I also did a bunch of crazy effects and a fuzz bass but I don't think I'm going to use those tracks...

I also mixed the drums.  They were a pleasure to work with--very well recorded.  I love how dynamic they sound even after I've worked 'em over.  I hope you like them J.

My track is kind of mk ultra-meets-queens of the stone age at the moment.  I'm not sure how I'm going to the vocals yet.  I might hand it over to my singer but I'm pretty sure he'll get freaked out.  He's way too much into traditional sounding melodies...I might be debuting on lead vocals...

Oh well, I hope you guys are having as much fun as I am...

I've got the drum tracks on my transfer drive.

That's about as far as I've been able to get.

Got the tracks loaded into the daw last night. Hooked up a guitar chain and started rolling.

Got an idea brewing.

Fun stuff. I like the overall drum sounds.

Love the overall drum sounds, but I'm not crazy about the snare  Rolling Eyes.  Don't get me wrong, it's a good snare sound, just a little on the soft compared to what I've been working with lately.  When I went to gate a mult of the snare, I noticed that the kick bleed is often louder in the snare mic than the snare.  However, I think I get the vibe of the drummer, and this is definitely not a heavy tune.  I'm thinking the triplet feel from the snare is the key to this one.

I'm going with an acid jazz/fusion thing.  It'll be a change from all the rawk n' rowle I've been doin as of late.  Broke out the Wurlitzer 140b and Electric bass, plus I threw down a couple guitar ideas Twisted Evil Maybe I'll try an ,gasp, instrumental thing!

Hope everyone else is having fun!

I got bass down, mostly, need a few little punches in sections I wasn't sure about. Have a guitar part during the "verse" part.

snare sound was a bit soft.....i agree with that.

i'm not giving any suggestions or "hints" as to how to treat those sounds.  but i think you'll find you can beef it up with what you have in the 8 tracks.

about the genre of music......whatever the drum take makes you think of....GO WITH IT.

instrumentals are fine.

Wow...that snare sound does it for me for sure.  The end sounds so big; almost "In Utero" big...

I think I've got a small vocal idea but I need to make sure it stays simple.  There's just not a whole lot of room in there--I like my music to breath.

I bet I'm done with mine by this weekend...

I've downloaded the tracks.  I haven't even burned a CD to take to the studio and put on the RADAR.  My play for Monday is to start.

Got em loaded in the system.  Haven't done much other than that and listen to map out the changes.  Good sounding drums!

Bass is tracked, drums are fiddled with.  I need my geetar back so I can lay some shit down with that though!  I had originally planned on writing something "indie"-ish sounding, but the drums pushed me into a King's X-ish riff type area.  Which is cool, because I could stick with my usual bass tone anyway (very Pinnick-esque).

Now if only I could sing, so I could do harmonies Sad

Guitar and bass overdubs done and locked.

Vocals this weekend, then it'll be 'in the can'.

Man, I just realized I need to wrap this up, like, tonight or tomorrow afternoon.  I have finals all next week, then the next week my band is doing a mini tour of Arizona and New Mexico and THEN I have to be moved out of my apartment by that weekend.  How's that for rough?

I'm going to leave the arrangement how it is--I've simply played with it too much.  It's time to call it done.  I'm also using vocals in a really subtle way now.  Mostly instrumental...

I just need to clean up the low end on this mix and send that e-mail...

...I'm kind of scared now  Shocked
