Contacts at Record Labels...
« on: April 13, 2005, 10:21:07 AM »

Just curious as to how many of us out there have any contacts at record labels (whether it be major or independent). A&R contacts are good, but I was wondering if anyone has any other types of contacts at these labels, whether it be PR, admin., or whatever.
If anyone knows of, or has a database with any of this info., I'm sure many of us could find it useful. I'd actually be happy to help compile some of these things and post our findings here for all to benefit from(with consent from our moderator of course.)

If you have any of this info, or know of where I can find some, please pm me and I can start making a list.

I know there are books published with this sort of info, but to keep it up to date it'll cost you an arm and a leg to stay with the times. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

my consent....hahahaha

you're so polite!!!!!!!!!!

um, why not start an excel spreadsheet, and we'll all pass it around and add what we can.

i can host the spreadsheet on my FTP

every one just has to agree to be cool about it and not screw up the formating.

if we do this, you HAVE to make certain your info is correct.  granted, people at labels get fired and such.  but addresses don't change that often.

maybe picking up a current copy of the "indie bible" and getting allt he labels in there on a spreadsheet is a good start.

then we can update and add to it as we go.

This is a bad idea for a number of reasons. What do you expect to do with the contact information? Cold call them?!

i can't see a reason why simply having a spreadsheet with contacts on it could be a bad thing.

and i don't recall anyone saying we should track down phone numbers or private email addresses.

as far as i'm concerned, very few people have offered their helping hand to me or my band.  so if can compile my own list of resources a person could use to "help themselves" i can't even begin to understand why that would be a bad thing.

this is exactly how the 80's punk rock thing got going, and that gave birth to everything we in the underground have come to hold dear.

so we aren't mail ordering vinyl records from sst out of the back of a tiny fanzine, or mailing lists of all ages venues we can play at in rural towns across america to one another.

we're using the internet to network with each other, share resource, and further ourselves as independent bands fighting for a common goal.

i'm so sick of every one that gets anywhere acting like they just got accepted into some secret club that no one is allowed into.

"don't tell other bands what we're learning here, they might rise up and be better then us.................."

gimme a break.

No disrespect intended - I recognize you're the moderator of this forum and all, and believe me I'm as DIY as they come...

However, what I should have explained is that this could easily turn into a "shoot yourself in the foot" situation. Improperly used, the compiled information could easily, and possibly unintentionally, do more to hurt an individuals cause than help. That being said, the reason I brought it up the question of "What do you plan to do with this information?" was to help those involved be smart about what they're doing in the business.

CMJ used to publish a printed resource guide that cost about $99/year.  It covers radio, press, A & R, Radio Promotion, Publishing.  I used it for years to great effect.  It also tells you all the college radio stations info, including wattage, format and student population.  You can use this to target what stations to mail your disc to.  Now it's only available in on-line form.  http://www.cmj.com/company/faq.php#dir5.  It's worth looking into.

I've been cold-calling labels, distributors, managers, music departments of film studios & publishers for 20 years off and on.  Also, "cold-mailing" press kits followed by a cold call.  Now and then you'll get a reaction out of someone.  I've received quite a few emails and letters from the effort of "cold-mailing".  You might only get a 10-20% success rate out of the effort, and it may feel like a message in the bottle mentality.  You'all also spend quite a bit of money doing it.

I've also had situations where people I don't even know pass a disc along to people they know in the business.  Then you get a call or email out of the blue.

Once I met a guy at a gig whose sister was married to the guitarist of the Psychedelic Furs.  A phone call and a press kit later, I was corresponding with the Furs guitarist and we were discussing plans to get someone prominent in the biz to take us under his wing and possibly set us up with some kind of deal.

When we were with RedEye USA (distributor), they gladly provided me with an extensive mailing list that covered many important areas.

Ultimately, what I'm saying is you have to put yourself out there as much as you can afford to with the public, press, radio, and labels.  A lot of your packages may end up in the trash can unopened, but that's the risk you have to take unless you can find someone willing to represent you to the industry.

personally i can't worry about how someone else will use the list.

if they ruin their career by being an idiot, then they probably would have done just that anyway.  having a list of contacts will only accelerate their plan to fail.

I was actually planning on using it to call some cool indie chix for a date...no harm in that right? If I don't call them how will I know what the new orange is?

For $75, Pollstar sells a roster of everybody's name and number, etc. Record labels, publishers, you name it.

contacting labels or anyone in the biz in a place of power should be done with forethought and grace with purpose.
check out this link
it is the only real certified and updated place for the absolutely confirmed information
one must pay for it but like every good service it is well worth it if this is what you truly need and want
those of you who will complain about paying for it are probably not in need enough to really want it
since this is not a hobby for me
when i need the real deal contacts
i will pay for the A&R Registry so i don't have to fuck around with the wrong ones
this is because these damn A&R guys and their assistants are changing all the time
