And of course this is supported by hard Science. Since you are going from (relatively) no charge when you first play music, the dielectric needs some finite amount of time to get with the program. Is it a ms or a us? Personally, I'd give it a whole minute, just to let all them electrons settle down.  You know how they get. <SNIP> It breaks in, but never wears out.  Gotta love that concept! Shouldn't we be proud that our ears adjust, and not ashamed to admit it? It must be the wire the changes... DC

It has happened to me a few times.  Install new premium cable - sounds bright.  Run system with power amp turned off for a few hours, listen again, sounds normal.  Darren at DH Labs told me that a chemical engineer buddy of his says there is something to the dielectric changing after a few hours use.  (How's that for hard science?) He also said that the ear getting adjusted is a possible explanation. (Hey, doesn't that presume that cables do sound different?) When DH Labs ships cable for review they break them in first.  I will explain all about it in my new book "Mastering Audio - The Agony and The Ecstasy."

Surely you don't expect any difference going in that might make the wetware more "sensitive?"

Or is the ear fair, and the brain flawed?

Because both times it was the same kind of cable - with the cool teflon foam - the same kind Cardas was positing about.

I'd be curious to know what your impression of the RCA's with a vocal track is; if you get the chance.

Finally had a chance to do some work with my new (to me) L2M MKII today... although it sounds fine on first listen with the stocker tubes I may feel the need to experiment with some mods...

It's very red... and looks damn cool in the rack...

It's the coolest looking piece of gear ever made

It's like Ferarri red, you just can't beat it ...


I do have a problem matching it with bot my Lavry blue AND my Cranesong rig (especially the Lavry, makes me wanna upgrade to gold channel if you ask me)

What's the difference between the Brimars and RCA supposed to be?
Please if you can share your experiences.
Brimars appear to be much more expensive than RCA's.
Also: are they both a direct replacement for the stock tubes?

I think RCA black plates are the same as Mullards, but even that I'm not sure about.  In that era only a few factories made tubes and each one made maybe one type (or a few limited types at most) so the companies would swap labels and rebrand regularly.
