Millennia/Forssell NSEQ-1 opinions, please
« on: March 24, 2005, 01:43:25 PM »

Im considering buying one for 2-buss as well as project mastering duties. Is it really suitable for mastering?

Absolutely! A very nice, transparent but sweet equalizer. The detented version will help. A modification to reduce the range of the EQ pots will help, couple of resistors to change. I believe that the coarse range can remain the same and the fine range finally becomes less than a dB per step.

Thanks, Bob. I'm not sure if this is the detented version, but it has a "LOW RANGE" switch per channel.

There is also a mastering version or the NSEQ with a smaller range.

Does Forsell still modify Millennia Media units?

I use that Millenia NSEQ-2 mastering EQ daily... it sounds fabulous...

I really like the 1 dB steps (approx) and repeatable click-stop knobs.

The high end, esp 21kHz shelf is outstanding.

I Highly recommend it... esp the mastering version.

However the low end seems to skip from 60Hz to 90Hz on the analyzer, finding a low D 73Hz or a low E 82Hz requires widening the Q, which sometimes requires the use of an additional EQ.

The other idiosyncrasy of this EQ is a gain loss of about 6 dB due to internal 'unbalanced' circuitry.

question: will the Forssell mods address the low freq issue, and what other enhancements do they provide.

I think the weak link of this EQ is simply that the markings on the faceplate are VERY approximate. You definitely have to go for a general range and then tune by ear (as if that's not what you're supposed to do)---which is a bit of a drag for those of us with near-perfect pitch.

Well, you could get the balanced version, but it might not sound as good Smile

It is unity gain (within a few 10ths of a dB) measured from pin 2-3 of the input to pin 2-3 of the output. Just that if you feed it an active balanced source you will lose 6 dB. I don't even make up for it, I just run my entire chain unbalanced at +18 dBu = 0 dBFS (sine wave) and stop "worrying" about it.

Fred's never spoken to me about other mods, but don't hesitate to ask, he's very creative! I had the gain range mod done and a mod to put the tubes on standby when not in use, keeps the heat down. But that proved VERY costly to do... required adding more than one relay in there.

Thanks for the info Bob...

I agree that the markings on the faceplate are VERY approximate, in fact the first thing I did was to send pink noise through the unit, on a tight Q, and see exactly what the freq centers are on each detent, with an analyzer, and chart the actual freq -vs- how they're labelled. The results were accurate at some, and surprisingly "off" on other centers.

I've found the same tendency on the GML & Sontecs as well. But I guess perfectly accurate labelling is really not that crucial, since like you mentioned, we tune EQs by ear, rather than by number.

question: is their a 70-80Hz "hole" on the NSEQ-2?

p.s.

I recently did a mastering workshop at SXSW in Austin with Bob Ludwig, he recommended your book, said he agreed with most of it! I gotta read it!

I don't know... I'd have to play with it and pay attention to that. I usually just turn he knobs until it sounds good  Smile

Great! Well, no one should agree 100% with anything!
