Need audiologist recommendation in NYC
« on: March 31, 2005, 07:19:16 PM »

Hello all,
I took a fairly good shot on the ear the other day while playing basketball, and have consequentially suffered from some hearing loss.  It's getting better but i'm still not near where i was a day ago when it happened.  Does anyone know of a good audiologist in the NYC area?  I've been googleing but i can't really come across any good info other than a list of places.  FWIW, i seem to be experiencing LOW freq. loss in the ear, which seems to be fairly uncommon.  I did some basic tests here with a sine wave and it seems like i'm hearing about 10-20 db less between 30 hz and 125 hz, depending on the frequency. Highs seem ok.  Of course i've been mindful of the amount of gain while testing as i don't want to make the problem any worse.  I was pleased to find out also that i can actually hear down to 20hz almost evenly between ears, i never checked before the incident.
Anyways, does anyone know of the good places around town, particularly those who deal with people who NEED to hear correctly like us?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm bumping this post because i don't want it to fall back in the pages.  I hope no one minds.  Thanks for the tip Rail, i've emailed them and will call tomorrow if i don't get a response.
Any other ideas?? i know a lot of you guys are in New York, and i'd imagine there has to be a decent facility around here somewhere.
Thanks again

as a doctor (not ENT i must specify), i suggest you, first of all, give it some time

the audiologist will only tell you what you already know (and take your money)

you suffered a trauma to your ear

it will not get any worse if you do nothing about it, and, in all probability, will get better as the trauma heals

if your hearing does not improve after a few weeks, or if it gets WORSE at any stage, you need to see an ENT specialist

in the unlikely event that the damage was permanent, there may be some intervention that can improve it

but, as a rule, acute events heal on their own accord, and in case of ears, it can take a few weeks

of course, if pain persists, see your doctor bla-bla-medicolegal bla
