sigh ... if only it were practical
« on: March 14, 2005, 05:10:13 PM »

I was admiring this all weekend.  I thought that I'd share.  I'm sure this brings back memories for some of you.

They say the heart of Rock & Roll is still beating, which is amazing if you consider all the blow it's done over the years.

"The Internet enables pompous blowhards to interact with other pompous blowhards in a big circle jerk of pomposity." - Bill Maher

"The negative aspects of this business, not only will continue to prevail, but will continue to accelerate in madness. Conditions aren't going to get better, because the economics of rock and roll are getting closer and closer to the economics of Big Business America." - Bill Graham

I have 5 Altec mixers (4 channel) of the same vintage, rusting away in the shed. I never thought they were close to high quality...they are ball park sound.

Somebody paid out the rear for a POS IMHO.

This was the original Ardent Studios board (or at least one just like it), before we went "pro" with the "real" studio building.  These were radio boards; the pots when turned all the way down would detent-click into cue channel for auditioning the disk.

The (computer assisted?) 'English' in that auction is magnificent.  Be sure to read the Q and A portion or else you might miss 'I today plow the photos and the shipment.' and 'In Spain the subject of the transport does not work very well.'  Oh and the offer from Lagos is amazing as well ('Please for God sake know that this item must meet-up with the ordination day').

Seeing what peeps are paying for those things, why should you care what they sound like??

If I wuz you, my weekend project would be: Bust out a few cans of Rustoleum, and get those f&ckers up on Ebay, pronto.

According to "Hammer of the Gods," Zep II was mixed on a 12 channel Altec console. Did it look something like this?

Vincent Gallo (no comment) has one of these - and tried to make it his main board. They are NOT great-sounding, just big and plain. NO panning, no eq, not much of anything. FOr the limitations, you can get good mic pre's better than this and a cleaner summing mixer if you shop around.
