Eccentric DIY songwriters pt 100 (Daniel Johnson thread)

The Paul Superapple thread made me think of this singersongwriter in Texas  - Daniel Johnson...I;d actually heard a bit of his music on cassette a friend had & when I was in Austin once years ago I picked up one of his homemade casettes from that 'indie' record shop with the big Daniel Johnson mural on the side..I think the tape was the 'classic' 'Hi how are you?'

Anyway, unlike other mad persons driven to put down their works and unleash them upon the World in whatever way, via home cassette recordings etc - DJ's songs, delivery and work, at least what I heard, while quite bizarre and lofi, has something special about it...
the tape I had sounded like it was recorded in his kitchen on a wobbly cassette recorder...'Running Water' had just a brilliant and arresting delivery..

Looking at the above sites, it seems he has some big time admirers nowadays..

So - it can be done!

That store was The Record Exchange (subsequently renamed The Sound Exchange).  They closed their doors a few years ago, and recently a fast-food Mexican restaurant called Baja Fresh set up shop in that space.  Interestly enough in these days of big corporate tyranny, the Baja Fresh owners succumbed to local pressure and not only decided not to paint over that mural, but actually delayed their opening by over a month to incorporate some of Daniel Johnston's "look and feel" into their restaurant.  (To tell you the truth, I don't recall noticing any of his artwork the one time I ate there, but that doesn't mean it's not there.)

Daniel has a big supporter in local bassist/producer Brian Beattie (Glass Eye, etc.) and his ex-bandmate Kathy McCarty  (misspellings unintentional).  I've seen Brian post on TapeOp, so you might track him down there.  (He might post here, too.)  Other notables who have covered his work include The Reivers and fIREHOSE (or was it the Minutemen?)
