We just had Leo Kottke here in our studio at Compass Point, recording his entire new album.  He was an extraordinarily nice person, and what a player!

thanx for that, bill

hearing michael hedges for the first time, is one of those moments that stays with you forever

he totally exploded any notions i had of playing acoustic gtr

on the awards anecdotes side, i have a second hand story from a friend who was nominated for a timmy or a tommy, or whatever those tv awards are called, that are a month before the oscars (the name totally escapes me)

anyway, she, like bill, was nominated, and, like bill, had to sit for hours waiting for her category

having not expected to win, she availed herself of the free champagne available to her

when her name was called out, she was plastered, and she went on to make a total fool of herself on stage

suffice to say, when she won again the next year, she was sober

"Don't look at the dogs, work the lock."
Bill

I have to fess up here. I didn't make this quote up.

I stole it from Tom Sellect in the show Magnum PI. There was one episode where Magnum was breaking into the Ferrari and Zeus and Apollo caught him. As they came roaring down the driveway barking and snarling, Magnum was furiously trying to pick the lock and get safely in the car. He started saying to himself, "Don't look at the dogs, work the lock. Don't look at the dogs, work the lock." He then couldn't help but peak at those two monsters bearing down on him and he said, "OOOHH you looked at the dogs!" He got in the car just in the nick of time.

I used to love to tell this to my students because I find that most of my life and (if they choose such a challenging profession as this) theirs as well, is contained in that one little sentence.

Best Regards,

Bill

it has so much wisdom within it, i would say it's an old classic

but, for fairness sake i will reattribute the source to magnum pi

I too gotta chime in on how hearing Micheal Hedges, is a life changing experience.

Acoustic guitar had never reached that altitude before (or since)

I was lucky enough to attend a workshop he did at Danny's music.

I was the knuckle head without pen and paper. doh!.

Even when he was tuning, you could tell this was one of the most gifted guitarists
on the planet.

but I do remember what I call the "Micheal Hedges" tunning:

Stacked fifths, with the high E staying put.
drop the B to an A, drop the G down to a D unison with the other D
drop the A down to a G and drop the E down to a C.

Shit, I tried that on my Kurzweil workstation/synth keyboard and it was a no-go.  Rolling Eyes  Laughing ---Lee
