If you want it Terry, lets see if it can happen.

This is my favorite place on PSW and others feel the same way.

Do you stay or do you go??

Month is about out......

Amen to the above.

This has been great. No matter what you decide Terry, thanks.

P.S. Even my wife will be sad to see you go. She has enjoyed a lot of these stories.

I would like to thank Terry as well for the valuable time he has given to us. I have learned an enormous amount from reading this forum.

I would also like to see you given a permanent home, if the powers that be (including yourself) are amenable to it.

Terry,

Your forum has had the best vibe of any I have been on. I hope you stay.

I'm sure we have only scratched the surface of what we can learn from you. I still want to know about Mutt.

Best Regards,

I've thoroughly enjoyed this forum and will be sorry to see it end.  Terry, sincere thanks for your wonderful stories, historical glimpses, and insightful opinions.  Like Greg, I've showed a few of these threads to my wife, who truly enjoyed them.

I'm sure Terry has a stupendous number of recollections from his career, though I'm not sure he would have time to share them all...

Anyway, thanks again for a window on a world of fabulous music that I had always loved, but had little knowledge about.  Terry, you made my month.

Actually, I am overwhelmed by what has happened here.  I had never really paid much attention to forums, until just a couple of months ago, when I almost accidentally was lead to REP by a Google search about something or other...

But I see now that, in a strange way, we all have a new set of friends.  I believe that forums such as these are bringing people together; information is shared, stories are told, in a way previously impossible.  There were many years of working as a Producer and/or Engineer in which I had absolutely no idea how "most people" did the very job which I was doing.  Everyone who "did this" was just so busy working 12-16 hours a day, one rarely got to "hang out" with your peers.  Now all of that has changed.

I am amazed that in the shortest month, shortened even further by all of the web server problems, this one place has had almost 50,000 hits, and well over 700 posts in 47 topics.  I never imagined anyone even cared what I was doing, or had done, much less what everybody else was doing.

It has indeed been very enjoyable, and I, too would hate to "see it end like this."  In fact, I have already been asked to keep this Forum going through March as well.

I would be honoured to moderate this forum for a further length of time, or even permanently if that fit the needs and decisions of the powers-that-be...At least as long as it was productive and enjoyable to all!

For now, though, thanks to everyone for all of the amazing, thorough, informative, and insightful posts you have added to these topics.  I have been very impressed by the high level of thinking which has so obviously gone into them.  I anticipate a lot more in future!

Oh, and by the way, when first asked to do this, my answer really was "I'm comping vocals right now, and I really don't have time for this...!"  (But I was assured it would work out, and it has.)  And I am now proud to announce that the vocals have all been comped, at least for this project...but now, I'm mixing, and I don't have time for......

I, too have noted that ratio and been most grateful for it--I'm currently minding the desk at an under-construction studio and this forum has been one of the few things that's kept me sane.

Glad to hear you're sticking around for another month, Terry!

Terry, that is so awesome that you'll be sticking around for at least another month!  And I too hope you'll be here longer... yes I agree, forums like this are a wonderful way for people to share knowledge who are normally stuck inside their studios. I told my wife that I had mentioned her in this thread. She said that she'd often laugh out loud while reading the posts at work. The people she works with, at a creative arts company, would ask what's so funny? She'd tell them and they just wouldn't get the joke.

A couple of years ago, she was visiting her brothers shared house. Bob Marley came on MTV and all the guys were going 'nice shirt', while she said 'nice Les Paul'!

I wonder if there needs to be another forum, for our wives and girlfriends to debrief?

I never imagined anyone even cared what I was doing, or had done, much less what everybody else was doing.

This reminds me of James Jamerson, who later in life, while sitting in a restaurant when a classic Motown tune came over the radio, started to mention to the waiter that he had actually played on the song, and then pulled back, thinking better of it. When asked why he didn’t tell the waiter as he had first intended, Jamerson replied “No one cares”. It’s tragic that individuals who have contributed so much to the art form we love, such as yourself Terry, could ever think that “No one cares”. Believe me, there are a lot of us who care and are grateful for your contributions. Thanks for taking the time to share so unselfishly with us, in the past and the future.

Ditto.  I rather tend to think the opposite... no matter what you do, if you do it well, someone somewhere will care.  And you can really make a difference to those people's lives.

The trick is finding the people who care.  The Internet is really great for that.  No matter what you do you can find someone who shares your passion, whether it's fine audio or sex with goats. Very Happy

I've lurked in these forums for quite some time, as you can see I don't post much, I have way more to learn from you gentlemen that I have to contribute, however I have one thought on Terry and the level of conversation in this forum the past month.

Terry tells stories for a month, solicits opinions on all sorts of interesting things, freely gives his experiences to anyone who cares to read them, and.....

After over a month he cuts loose with the Beatles "Ghost" story, one of the coolest things I've ever heard.

Makes me wonder what he's saving for his one year anniversary here!

Thanks for your time Terry, it's truly appreciated.

Thank you Mr. Moss!

In fact, I do have a lot more "tales from the crypt," but I just have to find the time to write some of them down in this forum place.  For the past two years I've been outlining all of these for an odd little book to come soon.  So, can't put them ALL here!

Terry,

When my brothers and I were kids crowded into our little bedroom in our parents house with nothing but a record player and a couple of guitars to occupy ourselves with, we spent endless hours listening to records you worked on, jamming with them, and talking about the sounds on those records to the point of picking out some of the finer nuances. So I have to tell you: It is with a truly poignant delight I feel in seeing you discuss these works, and your work today, here on this forum.

Recently both of my brothers stopped by my studio, one on a break from a tour with Godsmack and Metallica, and the other on a break from a tour with Greenday. I showed them the thread "About Vocal Production" and said with immense pride, "Look! I'm talking with TERRY MANNING!" They were like "Wha???" and the three of us sat down and read the thread together. The three of us hadn't been alone in a room together in over a decade, but it suddenly felt like we were back in that place when we were kids again, thrilled with what we do in music. It gave me goosebumps.

I hope you establish a permanent presense here at REP as a moderator. But it's not simply because of your experience, or because I love the recordings you worked on. It's your positivity. Your spirit is refreshing and inspiring...and needed, especially now, in the midst of the turmoil our industry is currently going through. Your passion and your LOVE of music combined with your sense of humor and perspective towards the work of getting things done, sets an example we all benefit from.

Like I said on the Vocal thread, I was really glad to see you begin posting here, and immediately sensed your presence here as a source of balance and sanity in what can be a somewhat unbalanced and insane calling. Everyone here obviously appreciates it, this special happening you've established here. Such special happenings are rare, and must be savored once established, because we have no idea how sorely they will be missed once gone.

As you said: "We all have a new set of friends." How invaluable is that?

Most.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words, for the occasional disagreements, and especially for the participation with such thoughtful and insightful comments.

For my part, I am happy to continue this section of the Forum as long as the decision makers think it reasonable.  Personally, I have learned much from all of this.

The one thing I hate about so many chat rooms, IM's, Fora, etc., is the mindless chatter with which people waste so much time.  The basic philosophy of this Forum from the outset was to spend our valuable time talking about the more important aspects of sound and production, as well as the way in which classic recordings relate to our recordings of today and those of the future.  Lo and behold, you have all made that happen!

Best to all,

Terry

come on now, terry, mindless chatter is what stops us from taking ourselves too seriously (WWJJD)

what i enjoy about your hangout is the conspicuous lack of gear obsession that (for me, at least) raises the noise to signal ratio of a forum considerably

i am much more interested in the philosophy of record production, and your experience and openness helps all of us, the musically obsessed, to express our often varying, and more often not, opinions

as far as i'm concerned, stay as long as you can stand it

This is the forum I always go to first. You're a great moderator. Of course everybody here in the REP is great, but your forum is just fantastic. And the crowd you bring to the forum, especially JJ, is really entertaining and insightful.

Thanks,

Jack

I've really enjoyed reading here. I think this is a great place to hang.

At one point, I got in a nasty tit for tat with a guy who is no longer here at REP and I found myself really being an idiot! Some might not have really forgiven me for being so out of hand but, I've learned my lesson. Life is to short and it's places like this that make it easy to be part of productive discussion and spirited debate that doesn't get personal.

I'm glad you're here Terry. Hope you can stay.

For my part, I am happy to continue this section of the Forum as long as the decision makers think it reasonable.

I should think that Fletcher and Co. should by this point recognize that you're a box office draw and want you permanently on the marquee.

As far as I personally am concerned, your vast experience and most impressive discography, fascinating stories and anecdotes, wit and deskside manner all add up to one conclusion:
