I discovered that when 13 ... 22 years ago.  I've played that backwards for people and freaked them out.  BTW, Andy Johns did that record, not Terry.

Thats pretty funny..
FWIW I find the regular 'forward' version more of a possible 'Satanic message'...whatever it is they're trying to say..(!)..
What is a spring cleaning for the May Queen ?
Could it be NATAS?
Do you think Planty was clever enough to come up with lyrics that kind of make sense in one direction but NO sense backwards (IMO), but does contain something sounding like 'Satan'....?
I'm not so sure..
an accidental combination of sounds or the work of the hand of Satan on his musical puppets?
Or.. was it the mudshark?

Just out of curiousity does anyone know if people have discovered other strange and mysterious messages whilst playing music backwards, say Christian contemporary, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Celine Dion etc..

I'm wondering how often strange stuff shows up backwards, just as a random consequence of sounds..

Well one thing's for sure  -- they don't get much credit for understanding the lyrics in the "forward" version.  The word is "sprinkling" not spring clean.  The idea being that if there's a bustle (what women wore at one time) in your hedge row, then two people are having sex there and one shouldn't be upset -- just consider it as what people do in spring time.

The lyric is pretty interesting backwards and makes some degree of sense, BUT!  If people can't figure out the lyrics when they are "forward" then who the hell cares what it says backwards?  No one I know listens backwards.  In fact, many people couldn't even tell you what their favorite song was about "forwards" or not.

Just be inspired by Elton John's "Tiny Dancer"  and "count the 'head lice' on the highway."

Oh my God, here it all comes again...

First, I wasn't directly involved in the (released) recording of "Stairway," but I can assure you that there was NO intent for anything to sound like it was "saying anything backwards."

The whole backwards thing I have always found to be totally ridiculous.  Here are some websites which give "information" about it:

http://www.reversespeech.com/music_reversals.htm

http://www.wootang.net/backmask/classicrock.html

http://skepdic.com/backward.html

http://skepdic.com/backmess.html

Here, there are "Satanic Messages" supplied by everyone from Britney Spears to Mary Poppins!

In fact, it has become a whole "backmasking" industry, and actually provides a living for a few people!

When I first noticed that some Beatles recordings had backwards sounds on them, I decided to experiment with the whole thing.  I thought someone was saying (forgive me for this!) "Paul's a Queer" on "Yellow Submarine" (now I think it was probably  "All's clear," or something more appropriate to the meaning of the song, but hey, it was a long time ago!)  I thought that this "saying" might have been performed in a backwards manner.  So, for some strange reason, I recorded that same saying forwards, turned that around backwards, and worked a long time learning phonetically, and as "correctly" as possible, to say the backwards sounds FORWARDS.  In other words, I was soon speaking "backwards."  Then I recorded that backwards speech, and turned THAT recording around to play in reverse.  The result was the saying "Paul's a Queer" being phonetically rendered forwards, but with an out-of-this-worldly, almost mutant sounding speech pattern.  ("Ray-oook'---nyeh-sssssslop'" for those who want to learn this august phrase in 'backwards-speak.')  All that this experiment showed was that I was not to be trusted with any spare time.

On another occasion, years later, I was producing a band which was somewhat heavy, and we had an instrumental track which was almost demonic sounding, musically.  So for fun, I recorded the lead singer speaking phrases like "Eat all your vegetables!" and "Don't forget to brush your teeth!" and other excellent, non-Satanic things.  We turned those around backwards, and put them loudly throughout the song.  No one at the label, at radio, or from any Christian tolerance group ever said a word!  But it sure sounded "Satanic!"

I remember when I was a kid hearing on WMET in Chicago that somebody had discovered a backwards hidden message on The Wall.  I googled it and sure enough found it.  At the end of Goodbye Blue Sky", if you reverse it, it says, "Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm".

Great story!!

Here's another site that tries to explain backwards masking techniques and their use in popular music:

http://www.triplo.com/ev/reversal/

I remember a TV show several years back in which some new-age "doctor" was claiming that we all use backwards speech daily in normal conversations which indicate what we "really" feel rather than what we might be saying verbally in "non-reversed" speech. So, according to him, we're all subconsciously using backwards masking at all times in all forms of verbal and audable communication forms... yup. Rolling Eyes

(record that, reverse it, listen to it, and you'll know what I feel about that bunch of bannas!) Smile

One other thing I find funny is that they will almost always print out "the words" for you, so that you can read them as you hear the backwards stuff...that makes it A LOT easier to tell what they're "saying," doesn't it!!!

No, I'm *not* kidding.  A bustle was a framework women wore to add fullness to their skirts.  Check here for the definition.   http://www.cogsci.princeton.edu/cgi-bin/webwn?stage=1&wo rd=bustle

And I still stand by my explanation of that line.  It's amazing maxdimario that you have figured out what none of the rest of us could.  If I have read you incorrectly, then I apologize.  Otherwise, I don't appreciate the sarcasm.

And "sprinkling" is a sort of pun.  Just as one "waters" the lawn, there's a sprinkling happening from the sex in the hedgerow.

When it comes to words, it's not smart to f**k with English majors! ;>)

Just to add fuel to the fire here:

On the tune Black Dog, where Plant sings:

"Took my money, took my car, started telling her friends she's gonna be a star..."

If you reverse it says:

"ooooooooooooooHHH SATAN!"

Very distinct.  Discovered it when I was 13 - slip cueing against the DJ needle on my turntable.

Now, I don't think they meant it to be there, just a trick that phonemes play, IMHO.

pretty cool line actually.

meanwhile, I have discovered that if one plays Babylon Sister backwards it says "Sterile, misuse of high paid studio musicians"

REALLY scary.

Don't mean to emit any negative vibes here.
Sorry to appear sarcastic, but there are two meanings to bustle, one is the article of women's clothing, and the other is the one I quoted above from a dictionary.

Gradeschool jokes:

-What word begins with F and ends with U-C-K?

-Oooooh, I'm gonna tell on you!

-What do you mean? It's FiretrUCK! What word did you think I meant?

and...

-How do you spell pans?

  P-A-N-S

-How do you spell pots?

  P-O-T-S

What do you do when you come to a green light?

  ....doh!

Actually we don't listen and uncode in a serial way even if our ears recieve information that way.

But backward masking still falls under humor, IMO. And I think that if you have to listen to Britney backwards to discover the evil, you need to be more worried about forward-masking.

You KNOW what I'll be doing in the studio tonight, hahaha! Betcha I won't be the only one, either...

Maxdimario,

I am sorry too for anything offensive I wrote.  It is hard sometimes to read the tone of what is written.

Certainly no problem.

Yes, it's true.  Each to his own interpretation.  As you said, that's what art is all about.

I have also noticed that most times it's really difficult for me to hear the backwards messages unless I have been prompted as to what I "should" be hearing. I know others have mentioned this also, but I actually went to a few of the backwards-masking sites months ago and downloaded the audio files. While I was at the site(s) it was really easy to hear what I was prompted to hear (via what was printed on the web page translating the message) in the backwards message. A month later I listened to all the files again that I saved on my hard drive, without any prompts or cues as to what I was supposed to be hearing, and I couldn't make most of them out. To me this is evidence that most of these are of the "accidental" variety rather than the "deliberate" type (i.e. the backwards message in Pink Floyd's "Waiting for the Worms").

On what I did, there was ABSOLUTELY NEVER any mention of any backwards masking.  Of course, I only worked on a small portion of their total recorded output.  And Jimmy was definitely into the Aleister Crowley "Black Magick" situation (which was NOT satanic, by the way!)  But, being a friend of Jimmy's for many years, both before I worked on 3, and after, I think he would certainly have mentioned it.  We corresponded quite regularly, by phone or by letter (remember those?).  If he had been "up to" something like that, I know he would have said something about it.

Yes, I remember letters. (...actually, I just sent my gramps a B-Day card with G-Bush on the front holding up three fingers saying saying something like "So I hear you're another year older, I have three words to say to you..." so you open the card and it says "Happy Birthday" which of course is funny becuase that's only 2 words. Bush is like that and my gramps loves him. Confused )

Anyways, perhaps you should find the old letters from Jimmy, record yourself reading them aloud, reverse the track and then play them back. Maybe you'll hear what he *REALLY* was saying!!

Interesting as the clandestine art of the "back masker" may be, I wonder if we should have a thread on amusing / puzzling words engraved on the lead-out grooves on vinyl releases? What have you read?

I thought that this "saying" might have been performed in a backwards manner.

If there are any twin peaks fans in the house, this is exactly how all the dialogue for "the arm" (the short guy) was done.  They did a reading, played it backwards, the actor learned it phonetically backwards, and it was played forwards while the film for the scene was run backwards (yes, the scenes were essentially performed in reverse).

The first thing I did when I got a 4 track when I was 11 or so was try to recreate that stairway to heaven thing.  I worked on that with my neighbor for MONTHS and we did EVERYTHING we could think of to get that to work.  Our conclusion: you need to make a deal with the devil to have something that random occur on your record, case closed.

I was going to mention the same thing. I could be wrong, but wasn't  his first appearance done differently (regular speech played backwards) than the other times he showed up?

I remember when I was a kid hearing on WMET in Chicago that somebody had discovered a backwards hidden message on The Wall.  I googled it and sure enough found it.  At the end of Goodbye Blue Sky", if you reverse it, it says, "Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm".

WMET, now that's a blast from the past.  My brother and I shared a stereo that our Auntie Cath gave.  We used to listen to WMET all the time.  I remember some DJ who used to scream "WHAMMO!"  I usually associate his memory with Dr. Johnny Fever...
