[quote title=lowland wrote on Mon, 28 February 2005 00:16Nice to come across another audio person with a flight connection. The Trident was indeed the first commercial airliner with Autoland, though I believe the system was worked up on the Smiths fleet which included a Varsity and a (DH?) Dove.[/quote]

Hi

Some while ago my hobby was restoring old planes at Duxford... I rewired the second prototype Viscount

If you go to Duxford you'll find both Varsity and Dove on display.

The DH Dove is the first plane I ever flew in....

Actually DH had become a part of Hawker Siddeley(1960) before the Trident became reality.  (1963), evil tounges suspected that the americans used quite a few of the for economical reasons leftover ideas for the trident, to develop the 727. Wich in turn where the reason the Trident really wasn't that comercially succsesful.
(Much as they took quite a bit of "inspiration" from the Canceled TSR2 to make the F-111.)
The main problem  with the Trident was it's bad Vertical Speed performance wich caused ATC's with quite a few headaches, a proud european tradition that the Airbuses, most notably 330/340 series continues today.
European aircrafts do however have better mic-preamps for their PA.

Did anyone know BTW. that the flight control systems on Airbus A320/330/340's runs on 286-processors?

Doves where made by DeHavilland indeed!

Sorry about that, you got me triggered.  Rolling Eyes

Oh...ehr..and don't forget Palestrina, he did a good job of keeping music on track back then in...1577?

Nice pics, Geoff, you clever person - isn't the Dove a beautiful plane? I have an original pastel drawing of Smiths' G-AOSE in my mastering room - prettier than gold discs Smile

I see the Viscount was from British European Airways, presumably later BEA - anyone remember the bit in one of the Beatles films where they fly off in a helicopter with BEA-tles on the side?

Duxford is just up the M11 from me, about half an hour or so. Last time I was there (18 months?) I saw the Varsity and Viscount but not the Dove I think - perhaps it wasn't on display at the time. We went in the Concorde and had to vacate because my oldest daughter felt claustrophobic - I don't blame her!

I feel I've hijacked this thread because of a chance remark of Randy's and expect the hand of our esteemed moderator on my collar at any moment...
