When your not recording
« on: March 05, 2005, 05:47:36 PM »

I had a band cancel on me this weekend and I've just realized that I have forgotten how to live.  I've been working 4 days per week at my internet job and 3.5 days per week in the studio for the past 2 years or so.

When I get a break, I seldom know what to do with it.  I'm too lazy to die maintenance or clean or whatever.

How do you guys clear your mind when you get an unexpected break?

I try to spend time with my wife and friends.  There are so many times when I don't have time for either that when I get some I try to make it count.

Read a novel
Design a new circuit, which I'll use on my next mix...
Play my guitar...
Cook bizarre and wonderful meals
Print something in my darkroom
re-rack my gear...
go to performances (dance, theater, performance art)

When you have kids it's easy. Hang with them and do a little work around the house, even better when the kids help out.

If it's less than 2 days:

Relax (watch tv)
Take a drive
Play X-box
Spend time with people who's names I've forgotten cause I havn't seen them in so long.....(my signifcant other somehow falls into this category)

More than 5 days:

LEAVE THE COUNTRY!!!

Seriously, every single time I've gotten more than 5 days off (happens about 1.5 times a year), I go to Vancouver. There's something about that city that I absolutely love. Plus having friends to get debaucherous with also helps. No talking about the "biz", or recording, it's all "hey man, wanna beer?" "or "dude, let's go play some street hockey!!" I don't think I'll ever grow out of wanting to hear that last phrase.

-Live gigs (3 this weekend, PLUS two string ensemble recording sessions)

-Repairs/upgrades to studio facilities (replacing squeaky boards, that kinda crap)

- Go to hospital for treatment of accidental self-inflicted injuries from above.

- Enjoy the precious few moments I get spending time with my wife (she works some atrocious hours, both shift and duration) as well ...

The few moments we do get to just set and be...we call that "Blob Time"...science fiction movies in the DVD, popcorn, and that sort of thing.

My apologies.  I didn't intend for this to be some sort AA meeting introduction.

I was looking for meaning to my life when I wasn't destracting myself with recording work.

I just got back from 4 days in Ft. Meyers [Red Sox spring training!!  whoo-hoo!!].  That was scheduled [like 3-4 months in advance] time off... on the odd occassion when there is unscheduled time off, then there always seems like there is a list the length of my leg of misc. shit to do... either around the house, with the kidz, or MAINTENANCE [which you seem to have opted not to do, but probably should have been on the top of your list... right after drinking yourself into a coma and screwing anything that will have you (if single... if married disregard unless you long to be single again)].

Brandon,

When I'm not recording, I'm usually mixing.

If I'm not doing either, I'm sleeping. Cool

Anytime the gear is not being used, it should be maintained, performance verified, maybe re-racked for increased ergonomics... there's always improvements that can be made.

Document, document, document...

If you are on a computer, BACK UP YER STUFF!!

HTH,
