BTW, how are we gonna pick a fav outta 30+ mixes...? Confused

Just pick the one that sucks a little less than your own.

Very Happy

hahahaha

Actually everyone has to vote for their top 3 fav's IN ORDER. This prevents everyone for voting for themselves and us having no "winner".

It's gonna take a while to listen to them all....I know..I've though about it. But it's going to be "loads of fun" Smile

Let's hope there are some great production ideas in these mixes.  I finished mine tonight.  It's like a psychodelic thrill ride.  I think.  Oh well, that's for you to decide.

I mix with a keyboard and a mouse.  But I do have one of those gell/wrist rest thingys, so it's cool.

And, you can't vote for yourself.

If everyone sends their votes to you, you'll know if they try and vote for themself.

I think it's more like running for President.  If you think you got it right, then you should vote for yourself.

I just finished. I only had a couple of hours to work on it so it aint fancy.

I liked the vocals. For the drums I used the room mics some overheads and one of the snare mics, that seemed like enough.  I never use tom mics for anything other than ambiance or triggers.

The bass was OK, the guitar was OK for the style. It was kind of fun.

I used PT6.7 TDM.
I used an SSL 384 for the 2 bus, a Daking comp for the lead vocal.
I used a little MDW EQ on the background vocals. No EQ on anything else.
I added a delay for a couple of spots and edited the tambo track slightly.

No reverbs, no toys, no autotune, no vocalign, no time. No ITB compsressors.

Now back to work!

BTW, have we talked about how these mixes will be distributed? At one point I caught wind of Randy posting mp3s of the mixes. Seems a shame for the work to be judged in this format.

I suggest, if Randy has the time, to put together CD's of the 16bit versions (probably will be two or three discs, I'd guess) to send out. We pay him for the discs and postage...and maybe a little extra for his time?

Or he can post the full AIFF versions on a server. But seems silly to have a mix comparison judged from mp3's.

How *will* the mixes be distributed?

Best,
Eric

I would love to just start sharing the mixes among ourselves, and talking about them.  Waiting for a month or 6 weeks to listen will really take the fun out of the process, I think.

As far as mp3s are concerned, I say just get over it.  All of us are sending mp3s out to have our work judged, EVERY DAY.  Even George is in the adds for Barbabatch, saying how cool it is to make files that way, and send them out.  I'm willing to admit that if you don't get my mix from an mp3, then the full 16 bit file isn't going to change your mind.

I think you can "ball -park" mixes using mp3's but judging 30 mixes by mp3 would be really tough. Especially top end detail, warmth etc.....
Personally, I'd rather wait and I don't mind paying a reasonable amount for a CD.

I'm with you on the MP3 thing as well. As well as the MP3 sharing.

I say MP3 is fine. I won't be judging anyone's mix based on "Top end detail or Warmth" I will be judging mainly on how the mix makes me feel.

Its not a technical matter to me once its finished. Its all about the vibe and whether or not I dig it.

if everyone want's mp3's I'd be more than happy to post them on the server where the session files are.

I originally thought of making cd's and sending them out to everyone...but if mp3's would be easier then we can go that route.

I agree that if you don't get the mix from an mp3..then you won't get it from a .wav..but .wav's do sound a lot better Smile

Either way...whatever.

Another idea I had was to post the .wav's on the server and let everyone download them. Bandwidth shouldn't be a problem...hopefully..I'll look into it.

Oh..and you can vote for yourself if you want...that's why your voting for 3 mixes. I expect everyone to vote for themselves..it's human nature.
