I'm going to be out of town for a week and so won't be able to respond. However, it is most important how far away the listener is from the back wall because the sound travels past the listener, reflects off the back wall and recombines at the listening position. A simple answer in a small room is that the closer you are to the front, the further you are from the back and that is usually the best that you can do with the circumstances. That is with symetrical monitoring.

If you look on the forum you'll see another more sophisticated calculator as well. IMHO, you need to ask a dedicated acoustics specialist at this point, and both Thomas and Ethan dispense good advice.

While I share the general aversion to EQ'ing the monitor path, I find it interesting that many active monitors out there have equalization circuitry in them;  not the bass/treble-tilt tone controls per se, but the fixed eq that's within the amp section circuit that's been factory-tweaked for 'flatter' anechoic measurement.

Maybe I'm wrong about this being common ..  I dunno.. I just have a memory of a tech at a studio I used to work in who was bitching about the "equalized" part of the 1031A's circuitry.

It's interesting because I wonder how much bumping and dipping is going on with this stuff, and how much it's being used to compensate for poor part tolerances, or to "fill" holes left by poor crossover design; especially if avoiding the distortions of an equalizer is of prime concern in avoiding EQing the monitors.
