what is your general goal when you set out to make a record?
(i.e. you are engineering the record, not in the band)

The main goal for me is always to please the client. They're paying me to make their record. Given that, my goal is to make sure every track has that magic that makes us smile when we hear the record. That magic comes in many forms.

1. Get into the bands head, help them reach their goals.

2. Help inspire great performances either by silently letting things flow, taking breaks when needed, breaking up fights, cattle prodding or consensus building. Whatever.

3. Doing better than I did last time.

4. Getting reimbursed for my efforts.

5. Free drinks at the cd release party. Heh.

To encourage and capture an excellent performance.  Helping someone achieve a higher standard than they could have achieved on their own, and getting thanked for it.

i always set out to create something unique for each band.  something that is personalized just for them.

seems pretty simple, but it's not.

A-1 goal is pleasing the band (or the producer or whoever is in charge).

I set personal goals along the way, as long as they do not interfere with the A-1.

It seems there are two paths to follow:

The first is to capture the sounds exactly as they are and reproduce them faithfully.

The other is to mangle the signals into unidentifiable sounds.

There are infinitely-many possibilities between these two extremes, my personal goal is to try as many of them as they will let me.

Getting paid is a good goal, too

My goal is to make the best possible record that those musicians can make at that time.

I push and pull, stand back, lead, follow whatever it takes.

I try my hardest to be "The 5th Beatle."

I honestly just record for fun, as I don't ever expect to be considered pro.

And I try to learn one new thing each time I do some work.

3) Thou shall interfere as little as possible, or as much as need to ensure this process
4) Thou shall extrude the very best elements from the session and blend them together in apropriate portions using the tools available to the best of my abilities.
5) Thou shall get paid and get another gig!!
6) Thou will have an endless supply of christmas presents for family
