First stages of new mastering room!
« on: January 15, 2005, 10:22:26 AM »

http://mfr1.org/ym/link/studio

These are photos of the first stages of my new space.
The actual mastering room that George Augspurger designed will be built in the existing over sized two car garage.

I started with the demo of a shed next to the garage(yes all by my self)& will end up with a new structure as a support room(front entrance, lounge, machine room, etc.)

I decided to use the superior walls system for the new structure. It's a prefab concrete fiberglass mixture that has all the framing set in.It's waterproof & sound resistant(not sure how much) Instead of the traditional method of creating foundations, this system requires only digging a minimal trench & filling it with crushed stone. They truck the walls in & use the crane to put them in place, at half the traditional cinder block price too....

At this point the next thing is to put the roof on. I don't have a full time crew working every day, so over the next couple of months I'll just add photos as it progresses.
Thanks,
for looking!
Ed

Ed,
Great to see you the other day, sorry I was so distracted. That new room is gonna be the bomb! I'm jealous! Best of luck with the new digs and family member.

I'm definitely also a little envious myself!

Ed - care to post any details on your workings with G.A., i.e. communicating your requirements, how he's mapped out the design for you, etc.?   Mighty curious in this regards as I've never worked directly with a big name acoustic architect like George yet.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Congrats and keep us informed, Ed...

Hopefully, I'm only a few months behind you now (my plans have changed weekly for the last two years, I have to go ahead and make a decision soon enough...).

Congrats Ed! I saw that wall construction type on This Old House. It looked very interesting. Saves a lot of labor costs. I'll have to invite myself over sometime.

Well, your all going to be welcome to come by. Maybe throw a football in the front yard too!

This place is only a 25min drive from the GW bridge, & there's a train from hoboken that stops close by.

This was a pretty simple process to design. I had to supply George with exact measurements & dimensions of th garage & attic.
The Biggest challenge was to decide if it would be beneficial to break through the attic to gain more hight, or find reasonable access to use for storage.

My carpenter discovered that the peaked roof was not the original roof, it was added at a later time on top of the flat roof that is now the attic floor. The weight of the newer roof was being held up by the cross beams of the garage ceiling & not the cinerblock walls. This discovery, & the fact that George didn't feel a pyramid roof was good for acoustical issues just reserved the attic for the future air ducts.

What i really like about George is that he will give you 3 or 4 well thought out options from what he feels is best to worst for one to choose.

Beyond the attic issue, he just gave me two concepts of studio design & shape to choose from. With only a few small changes the design was done.

After the new structure is signed off by town inspectors we will attack the garage & George's design. I'll post some drawings & photos at that time.

One of the fears I have at this point, is not knowing when i'll be ready to use the new space. i have to leave my current space by mid march & i don't think it's enough time.

I'm hoping some of you NY ME's help me out with your studio if i have no studio at that time. I'm sure something good can be worked out.

Ed,
You're more than welcome to come use mine if you get caught in a jam. I don't think we have the same gear, but it's here if you need it.
