CD goes to Titan / digital longevity issue pt.10,000
« on: January 14, 2005, 09:51:22 AM »

The Huygens probe is carrying a CD - how thoughtful. I wonder if it'll still play in a few million years when the piggybacked Earth bacteria evolve to 'Sony-Philips' levels?

"Temperatures of -180C make the prospect of finding Earth-type life extremely unlikely, although one group of US scientists claims conditions on the moon could support specially adapted life forms.

Just in case Huygens is not alone on the moon, a CD containing four pieces of instrumental music composed by French musicians Julien Civange and Louis Haeri is being carried on board."

Aliens will find the cd, de-code it and interpret the digital data as a declaration of war.
Watch out!

Sound of Titan

It's here:

Although these sounds are basically filtered noise, it is worth noting that the probe had been fitted with a microphonic device and that atmospheric vibrations otherwise known as sound are worth recording.
