$3K AD/DA - whaddya got?
« on: January 14, 2005, 12:36:56 AM »

So I'm thinking is high time to replace the PSX-100 with something mo' better, and I'm thinking that $K is my top limit.  Lavry? UA?  Benchmark? What else is there?   I'd love to get one that will do 16 bit as well as 24 bit conversions.

Thanks-

Lavry Blue or Benchmark or Mytek

you might also try over at Gearslutz, in High End

Has anyone compared the UA to the Mytek?  What is the general consensus re: Mytek?

I have the Mytek Stereo 96 boxes.  Lots of bang for buck - pretty darn transparent.  Me likes.  I've only done direct comparisons to the PSX-100 and Lucid so I can't tell you how it stacks up to the UA.  From my understanding the UA has a "sound" - which usually isn't what I look to a ad/da for.

Been thinking of getting Lavry Blue also but looking to add a dynamic processor or 2 (the API 2500 and DW Fearns new box both have my interest right now) before doing this.

Lavry baby... all the way.

A buddy of mine was recently writing a review on the UA 2192 box... it wasn't horrible, but it did have a fair bit of mid colour to it.

I had a Banchmark DA for a while too, but it was replaced with a lavry, but the Benchmark was nice and only marginally edged out by the Lavry.

The Mytek stuff is nice too.

They're all far better than crap-o-gee.   Laughing

Trev -
Have you heard the 16-X series yet though?  Seems to have gotten really good reviews and most say it's a big step up from their older products.  I've yet to check it out though.  The Mytek was a noticeble improvement over the PSX-100 to my ear fwiw.  I've never met anyone who regretted getting the Lavry Blues though.

Haven't heard the UA yet ... but the Mytek is clean with a SLIGHTLY soft top (LT op amps), whereas Benchmark stuff tends to be clean with a SLIGHTLY strident top.

Sorry to be a broken record, but Lavry, Benchmark, and Mytek are the ones to listen to in that price range, with the Lavry being the favorite.

The Lavry blue DAC (MDA824) is a great DAC, imo. I bought two of them back when they cost about twice as much as they do now and have never regretted it. I've not been able to give the ADC a serious listen, so I don't know how it stacks up against the better known ADCs, but I definitely love the HEDD-192 ADC (though I prefer the Lavry DAC over the HEDD DAC 90% of the time)...
