How many here actually use analog tape?
« on: January 04, 2005, 08:41:31 AM »

As far as I can tell most people on the forum don't seem to be sh*tting bricks with the demise of Quantegy so I wonder how many people here are actually using analog tape for their work?
Think I have managed to make a poll feature..
Thnx!
RM

Oh - guess I didn\'t.

Ok , dont have time to figure out why. Damn computers!

++++++++++++++++++

HEY - some secret genie got it happening while I was away and added the pertinent questions..zuper kool!

You forgot about the people who use both...  and pick and choose depending on the project. So you need a third item in the poll...

Yeah, what Bob said.

The main reason I'm not shitting bricks is because at the moment, I'm not too worried that tape is really going to go away.  Shitting bricks is kind of painful, and not a process I'd really like to go through until I'm really sure I have a good reason to do it.  It seems there is still a good supply of tape at the moment, and I'm confident that someone will take up the slack based on the current (smaller) demand and business model.

I use both. I guess my couple reels of 1/4" will be reserved for a special occasion until I can get some more.

Umm, I don't think he asked if you only used analog tape, looks like he asked if you use it. That doesn't mean exclusively...

If you use both, then you use analog.

What about people who love analog tape but rarely get a chance to use it?

16 trk 2 inch ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I own ProTools.

So....both.

I'm about to buy a Tascam ATR-60 16 TRK 1 inch; despite all the fear of all the analog tape disappearing. Rolling Eyes

I use both too, but typically use analog for 2-track mixdown only now, depending on the project.

Not nearly as upset about the idea of Quantegy going out as I was about the demise of Emtec. I want my 900!

Both absolutely.

I don't mind tracking to digital (and actually have done so very often for almost 20 years now), although there is certainly something excellent to be said for 2" analogue (especially my 16 track 2" 3M!).  But in my opinion, analogue IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST for mixing!  I have done extensive testing of various formats for mixdown media, and analogue (especially 1/2" or 1" stereo) always wins!  Recently on a project with Hugh Padgham, we mixed to four formats from Radar multi:  1) 96k/24 hi-res bit-splitting, 2) 1/2" 2 tr analogue,  3) back into the Radar itself, and 4) 44.1/16 dat backup through Apogee A/D.  We expected the 96/24 hi-res to be "da bomb" but there was no comparison for silkiness, smoothness, power; everything was better in the 1/2"!  There was certainly nothing wrong with the 96/24; it was very usable at the professional level, but it just didn't beat the analogue.  And when Bob L. played it back with his tube electronics 1/2", it really was "da bomb."  (By the way, the Radar 2 chan mix recordings were not very good to me...another surprise.)

Now I expect to use the dozen or so reels of 1/2"  I happen to have in stock for as long as I have to, mixing THROUGH the tape machine onto the best digital I have, and that will have to be the master...but no playing back with Bob or Ted's special playback machines (nothing wrong with mine I guess).

Hopefully we will indeed get a restart of Quantegy, or the ATR thing will work out, or something...but if so, it will be a solid business decision by whomever, based on cost/benefit analysis...and that doesn't bode well for us here in our "real world" of audio.  It will almost have to be a boutique type manufacturer, and there will certainly be a high price to pay for the product!

Yes.

Plus, I have been doing quite a bit of cassette archives to digital. It is wonderful how well some of these cassettes are holding up, especially the ones cut at 3.75ips. BIC made the original high speed record/playback machine..if you call 3.75 fast. I use 2" analog, 1/2" digital open and 1/2 digital closed but I just shift gears where the work is.

I use both.

The reason why a lot of folk aren't excreting bricks is probably because this wasn't such an unexpected development...  It's just been a matter of time.

My brick excretion ratio has lessened now that I've managed to order a pile of tape, 1 & 2 inch..enough to last me for 3-4 years at least...as long as the Stones don't decide to have me co-produce.
A whole heap 'o delicious smelling fresh new Quantegy 456.
Part arrived today, the rest tomorrow, and yet some more NOS even later..

I'm pretty economical with tape eg: I don't record multiple takes of the same tune but get it in the ONE..

So I'm kool until ATR, Quantegy Mach 2, the Government, or Christ  emerges from the heavens bearing analog manna for the people.

FWIW - those who are using BOTH analog & DAW vibe (like me) should still vote in category #1
