Back to the original question.

TellYaWhat.

We both get the same well recorded overdriven LesPaul/AC-30/SM57/1073 track to try and place "in-front" of a dense heavy rock mix.

You give me a properly operating LA-3a and 20 seconds.. and I'll give you an EL-8 and all year.

You will NEVER get the EL-8 to go where the LA-3a goes.

Never.

...

Also 'wet' toms. Try the same thing.

Cool, I follow you. How about up-front pop vocals then? That's the primary target for me at the moment. Thanks for your input, I really appreciate this kind of response.

Cheers,

Hey Tomas.

Maybe not the FIRST thing I'd try on a vocal.

But same deal.

ESPECIALLY when the LA-2a is ALMOST the right thing.

That's why we collect gear, right?

Best regards,

Ah yes but at the moment I'm kind of downsizing and selling away a lot of toys. I expect the day will come again when I go frenzy on a shopping spree and end up with too much gear once more. Smile

You've all been very helpful. I'm not going to buy the LA3A this time around.

I'm suspecting it's actually the 1176 vibe I'm looking for, albeit one that's not dried out and doesn't skimp on the low and topmost end.

Thanks,

The LA-3a is *great* on pop vocals. Bob Clearmountain typically uses this on a lead vocal...

Gaaaaaah! Now you're ruining the moment, dude! I just settled for not bying the thingie, see. Please don't make it worse by talking that kinda stuff, I'll be going nuts...

Perhaps I should just spring for an Atomic Squeezebox and be done with it. *grin*
