your go to bass plug in
« on: December 14, 2004, 01:08:03 PM »

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has a "go to" bass plug in you use frequently.

I've been getting some good sounds in general. I prefer to mic the cabinet if at all possible. gotta have that moving air. I get decent tracks with just compression and eq.

But, I wanted to know if anyone had a plug in you reach for when getting some great bass sounds. Specifically something to get those nice round tones. I remember using the Big Bottom years ago. I know they have a TDM plug, but I haven't heard it.

Thanks in advance,
A.J.

not a plug in, but the sans amp RBI (rack mount bass driver) has saved me MANY times in it's very short existence in my rack.

i haven't mixed a song yet with out it patched it.

I've used the PSP Vintage warmer on a couple of tracks, but it's uaually songs that are fairly sparse. It's not so good on dense rock mixes since it's just too friggin' round.

I really like Waves MaxxBass on a mix, never tried it on a bas guitar track.

I've been trying to find a decent sounding plug-in compressor for bass lately.  I recently did a project where I ended up just smashing the shit out uof it with an L1.  Seemed to work!

Oh..."nice round tones"

Hehe...oops.  What I did won't make that happen Wink

If we're just talking plugs i'd have to say for dynamics the UA 1176 plug (my hardware fave) or La2a depending on the material. The BF 1176 never acted like a real one, the UA one isn't but it's damn closer than the BF. I've become enamored with the DUYvalve plug although i normally steer clear of most "warmers". The PSP VW is cool but I can't find the love when it hits the bass like when it hits kick or snare.

The Sonalksis compressor is a must have, it's the closest thing to a Trakker/Distressor in the plug in realm. Utilized with DUYvalve it can really get close to those things...

thanks guys.

J. - this SansAmp unit looks great. I have Tech21 Trademark 60 for my live guitar set up. (36 friggin' pounds! and sounds great)... so I dig their stuff.

You mixed with it... Have you tracked with it?

I don't have the RBI, I just have the little pedal Sansamp, but I refuse to use any other sort of DI when I track.

As a bass player, I'm in the process of updating my rig, and the Sans is going to be my pre.  Just that into a power amp into a cab.

Which Sonalksis compressor are you referring to?

I think amp modeling plugins do really well on bass. I tend to use GuitarRig or Amplitube if anything at all.

yes, i've tracked with it...and when i track with it i don't a single thing with the tone at mix.  i just turn up the track and move on.

i love that box.

my evil twin is still cleaner, and more "hi-fi" sounding.  but the sans amp can really deliver.

It's not a plug-in, but my bass tones are never complete until they've been "Fatso'd". That box is a beast machine.

Hi,
been playin with the URS plugins the last two days and I'm amazed. Never heard a digital EQ like these. Mixed a couple songs yesterday with it on bass. One track was with the "API" and the other with the "Neve". To compress I use UAD 1176 (for a more midrange sound) and for slow rock or more round basses the UAD LA2A. The latter seems too slow for fast rock songs. Tried almost every damn Waves plugins and never found one that I liked. C1, MaxxBass, Renaissance Comp and so forth. But it's just a matter of taste. The Sonalksis I demoed few weeks ago and in fact it was very good. The EQ too.

Cheers.

I like using the waves C4 on bass, i can really get crazy if i need to. Tho lately I've been just taking bass direct thru an API 512 into a distressor and thats the bass. maybe adding a slight boost at around 400hz if it needs it.

I've been having a lot of good luck with the URS plug ins also. I bought the Classic Console N and A bundle, which I like. But the fulltec is where it's at in my opinion. That's definetly my next plug-in purchase. I wish I would have bought it instead of the CC bundle. The A and N series also do some bizzar sh*t when they clip. I tried to contact URS a couple times about my disatisfaction with those plug-ins over the fulltec but they wont return my e-mails. Blah blah. The plug-ins sound better than any other regardless.
