Selling on iTunes?
« on: December 03, 2004, 10:23:36 AM »

Hi all -

I heard someone recently say that they "had their song registered on iTunes".  What exactly does this mean?  Does that mean they got Apple to put their tune on iTunes?  How would an indie go about getting a song or album up on iTunes?

CDBaby is an online CD sales service (like an indie-minded amazon), if you have an album for sale on their site you can have them set you up at iTunes and some other similar services.

http://cdbaby.net/dd

A song sells for $.99, Apple keeps $.30, CDBaby keeps $.09, you get $.60.  Not a bad deal really...

That looks pretty cool.  Is anyone using them?  Are the reputable?  Are there any other's like them?

In my opinion CDBaby is very reputable.  Our small record label (Rexrode Records) uses them for all our bands, and we avoid having to do our own mail order.  They host a page for each album they sell:

www.cdbaby.com/cd/charlieshake

www.cdbaby.com/cd/rosetta

They also pay out weekly, if you have sales.  There also seems to be a fair number of people who browse the site looking for new music.

I do believe there are other companies that do the same thing, but I don't know much about them...
