Drum Sampling
« on: November 22, 2004, 12:30:04 AM »

Is anyone sound-replacing preformed drums??

I personally don't try to unless the drummer plays inconsistently or if his/her drums just suck. Tends to make the performance glue a little better, but I only do this if they drummers asks or if they are into it based on my recommendation.

Also, I am noticing that people are becoming accustomed to the sound of idealized drums due to modern radio stations and the bands that adhere to them. Its like the sound of natural studio drums and a true performance is not en-vogue anymore. Drummers want to sound like robots! A growing dilemma?

i've never recorded a drummer that wanted to sound like a robot.

if i had sound replacer, i might use it....but i don't have it, so i don't use it.

i know fibes uses it from time to time.....

if the performance is that bad "dynamically", you can always go through the massive pain in the butt of actually editing each hit with one that sounds good from the take.

i've done that before

i'm still very much into imperfect drum takes, tempo and dynamics....it adds personality.

Yep, i have but only when i screwed the pooch and have to save my own ass. BTW I don't use the brand Sound Replacer, I use a MIDI TRIGGER plug in in DP, it actually (when used properly) gets the velocities better and more diverse. Then you can flatten later.

I spent four hours replacing a kick (by hand) on a ten minute long song 'cause the trigger didn't take quite right... PITA but worth it. Why? Because i screwed up, it was my cross to bear.

There is a tune on my bands forthcoming album where a snare head broke during the exit from the breakdown so the coda sounded like shit. It was an incredible take (for my band) so we spent some time dropping in snare hits over the coda. It saved my ass again.

Sound Replacing always works best when you are simply adding the sample under the original, for instance adding a buzzy snare to a dull one to bring out some of the snares on the attack and decay.
It helps kill the Quaker Oats syndrome head tightening, snare tighten fools bring to the plate.

More coffee.

Drums, especially snares that sound like oatmeal boxes, the old school ones with MR. Quaker on them. No depth, just thud.

yeah, i didn't mean that literally, but more as a personal taste issue. like, i think drummers want to sound like robots, because they want there drums sound replaced which to me sounds like a robot.

Fibes, I have tried the Trigger plug in DP. Have you tried apptrigga? Works pretty well and allows you to blend sampled tones with the genuine tones. Its in AU format and works pretty good.

Anyone have a sample library they like best? What do the big guys use?

Redelephant,

I loaded APtrigga last night and must say, IT FUCKING ROCKS!

Thanks a million, that plug wipes the floor with Soudreplacer and does windows too.

i dunno, it seems to be quite in style with a lot of bands, especially in part with the renewed popularity with affair between rock and her electro love mistress. i blame the strokes... but then again what do i not blame the strokes for?
