Eric,

Dave Pensado turned in some mixes for one of my projects,  I thinik we can both agree that he is one great mixer.  His were 24 bit with no overs.  And it wasn't because he had an L2 across the bus, it's because he never went over.  That's really how  you should turn records in to be mastered.  When I make refs for clients, I use the L2 and make 'em loud, because I know it's important.

I'll go with what ever you guys want to do, but this shouldn't be about whose mix is loudest.  It's more about the ideas and the craftsmanship that go in to the thing.  I say make 'em sound as good as you can, and let the mastering guys turn them up to vomit level later on.

Are we recording engineers who know how to use dynamic range, or are we just into loud?

I think/hope that all of us have heard uncompressed/limited mixes, and are familiar with what that sounds like! I don't think it is necessary for anyone to do any "post" work....

By the same token, I'm not about to judge a mix negatively if there is compression and/or limiting. If it sounds good, it's good. I don't plan on looking at the waveforms of the mixes to see if somebody had an over or not.

Wow...this was all unexpected.

Umm..this is a mix contest...not a "are these cables better than those gold plated tripple dipped neo-titanium ferro fluid cooled flux capicator induced hyperactive network cabling?" comparison....

So....like I said in the e-mail..

1)   Mixes will be submitted in 2 formats:
 a) Mix 1 must be a stereo interleaved-16
    bit-44.1khz .wav
 b) Mix 2 must be a 24 bit master

These 2 files will be printed to a disk and mailed to me.

Do whatever you want to the stereo mix.....if you wanna slam an L2 across the buss...whatever.

We're mix engineers....let's all pretend this is for real and your  submitting this to a mastering engineer ok? Do as you wish....

I've received some e-mails asking about what people can do...

You have to use all the original files..and CAN NOT replace any of the original tracks.
Whatever else you want to do is fair game.

Let's stop fighting about what happens to the stereo mixes..because, other than possibly converting the files to mp3 so the public can hear them, I'm not going to do anything to the final mixes.

That's part of what seperates one mixer from another...

BTW...I'm going to the Columbus area Smile

I agree! Smile
Good mix doesn't need to be mastered. But a final limiter
is needed (for example RMS at -15dB).

I think that the sound level is not a problem for listeners.

I find it quite entertaining. It's interesting to hear people getting their undies in a bunch right about the time the files became available, and there was work now to be done.

Perhaps this comes down to semantics, but "all?" Part of mixing is deciding what NOT to use. I might, for example, not use "all" the room mics.

I think what you meant to say was "original" in that parts can't be rerecorded.

At this point, Randy, I bet you regret ever taking on this responsibility!!! Great job, BTW, monitoring all this.

I'm happy we've established that, thank you.

This is not intended as a harsh complaint, but downloading the files this way really blows chunks.  I have to use my son's PC, and I can only get them one at a time.  Every so often the server times me out and stops the download, so I have to quit Explorer and start again.  Very tedious.  Folders would have been nice.

Oh well, three more to go...

The server just timed me out again...

Dude, just download the lead vocal, and make an acapella mix.

Yes, that was pretty funny.  Wish you had suggested that before I downloaded the other 32 files!

Uuumm...Randy,

We have a problem.

No, nothing to do with RMS or anything of that sort.

I've been mixing the drum tracks of this song we're all supposed to be mixing tonight, and something very wrong is going on here.

I know, I know, you're in Ohio or someplace like that, but you'd better get your ass back to Utah (or wherever the hell you live, whatever) and fix this. PRONTO!

WTF dude??!!!

Why didn't you tell us this at the start??

There...

Is...

No...

Friggin'...

...

...

...

COWBELL!!!?????

What on Earth have you gotten us all into, giving us a mix with NO COWBELL??!!!

I demand an explaination!

Or at least, we bend that rule about "no adding tracks."

DAMMIT!

Get back to us about this ASAP.

Thanks!

Yeah..I guess a folder would have been a good idea Smile
Maybe next time. Sorry Steve

Eric,
There's no way I'd regret doing this....I'm having fun. It seem's I'm at my best when I'm strung to my wit's end.

Oh..and regarding muting stuff...whatever...I forgot to turn up the tamborine track..whoops...so if you wanna mute something..go ahead. Oh..and if you want to play by the rules..just turn it down to -75db or something..then it's still there...you're still using it...you just can't hear it. Smile Gotta be crafty.

I live in Phoenix...and love it here.
