Track limit....

I'm thinking like 56.....nice full mix without overkilling it......but even that's being conservative with the track counts these days.....

Thoughts?

Also...I'm sure finding a server won't be a problem.....

Carlos, you and I should get together with a great group and make beautiful music...

Jeez....   I'm also (unfortunately) familiar with the "late book it so you can't verify a PO with the label" trick. Well, my trick on return is not to release the masters until we get the credit card number of someone willing to commit to covering the mastering.

I don't remember exactly, but, the Music Player "contests" had 16, or, at the most 24 tracks. Anything more than that and I think I'd pass. 'Takes too much time. This is just for some good fun and insight into how others track and how others might mangle said tracks.

Some went for outrageous experimental mixes some went for very straight up mixes. It's all good and very interesting.

Those who participated voted on "the best" mixes.

Perhaps the top three mixes could be the basis for a Mastering "Contest" over on Brad's forum. Think of it more like an exhange of ideas rather than a "contest".

 Smile
So, lets start!
I agree with tracks limit.
We have to find a server. There are many free servers in Bulgaria,
but I am only one  Smile Maybe we must choose a server in your
country for best performance (file transfer, etc.)

I agree with all suggestions about track number.
But is internet connection good enough for this transfer?

It's not MP3 but WAV  Smile  Smile

I'm eager to start mixing and I am waiting for published session  Smile

Do you have idea for server?

If the .wav files all were lined up and started at the same time.....making for easy alignment later.....then we could post them individually...so each person could download at their leisure......even on dial up this would be feesable....though quite time consuming...

I might have something for the server...but no idea yet...so if anyone else has any ideas go ahead...

Downloading 16 to 24 tracks in 24 bit format would take way too long IMO.

Again, going back to the "other" contest :

1)all 24 bit, 44.1kHz WAV files were burned onto a hybrid Mac/PC CDR and sent out by regular mail. It cost all the participants a couple of bucks for the CDR and postage. Personally, I wouldn't mind adding a few dollars for the persons time to burn the CD's, package them, writing addresses, sending them out, etc.... This can be quite time consuming.

2)The participants send back their mixes as 16 bit 44.1kHz audio files on CDR, (unless people from the Mastering forum were to jump in and do a Mastering contest as I mentioned above.....wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

3)Everyone gets a compilation at the end.

4)There should be a limit to the number of participants. Maybe 20 total.

Everyone agreed that the previous contests should have at least , as a minimum "requirement",  live drums...(I mix way too much stuff with loops and machine drums) and preferably live bass and GTR etc...anyway, you get the idea.

I probally can have access to a server but i think the CDR idea is better/faster/less headache.

Live instruments definetly.

24/32 tracks is plenty i think.

Are we gonna get musicians to play the song we are gonna mix, or is one of us giving up a track that we recorded for everyone to mix??

Well......uh.....yes. This would be a song that was recorded in somones studio, of course,  and the individual tracks would be provided for the participants to re-mix.

What made the previous "contest" so interesting is that the song was an original composition recorded by the composer. He was really excited about other people mixing his song.
The tracks were pretty raw and definitely needed help and that's what made it fun. It's like "Overhaulin". People sliced and diced the tracks, mangled them in all kinds of creative, interesting ways. I hope we get this same type of opportunity.

BTW, another "rule" in that contest was that you could not re-record or add any new tracks. You had to go with what was provided.
Any "normal" studio tweaking/processing such as drum replacement, re-amping, auto-tuning(argh), time correction(sheesh), etc.....is O.K., and sometimes unavoidable,  but no new tracks.
