Please excuse my ignorance. But why the insert and not the Line In. Does the Insert bypass alot more innards? thanks for all the help on this.

Yup, it bypasses the entire preamp, AND the eq section.

Interesting! So the inserts are post-EQ on the Topaz boards?
In other posts, you talk about the EQ on the Topaz being fairly decent, so how are you using the EQ section then, on mixdown?

You hafta remember that we pretty much use the board's preamps, but if I do run an outboard preamp, I'll either worry about the eq during mixdown, or reroute the signal to the line input on the board if I absolutely must have eq during the tracking.
You also hafta remember that I come from a period in recording where we were lucky if the board had a simple hi/lo pair of eq knobs - even at all the major studios. Everythig was big Daven pots with huge 3" Bakelite knobs. No sliders - anywhere.
