Sonic quality, a/ds of 02R96 V2 and 01v 96 V2
« on: November 07, 2004, 11:36:11 AM »

Hi folks,
Can you guys comment about the sonic quality of the 02R96 and 01v 96 boards? a/d decent?
I currently have the older models, 02r V2 and 01v. Although reasonable for what I do and for what my clients pay for, they tend to have a somewhat slightly mettalic sound towards 5898 hz.
Any intros  are wellcomed.
Nice weekend

All of the newest generation of Yamaha consoles are a pretty substantial step up in sound from the old ones- especially from the O1V.  That being said, from a sonic standpoint, I actually prefer the DM1000 to the O2R96 in the little bits that I have used them, althought the O2R96 is a bit easier to get around, being a larger console (in size).  The O1V-96 is also a decent little board- huge improvements from the original O1V, however like the original, the sound is not as good as their higher-end brothers...

I have a DM 2000 and as I have said many times here, I love it. The only other digital console I have worked with in the past is the SSL Axiom MT and I much prefer the Yamaha. The mic pres are open and clean, the eq's are expressive, the patching is amazing and the console is easy to use.

It's not perfect, (there are buttons in strange places) but it is the best console for under $20k that I know of.

Best Regards,

Bill

I had an 02Rv2 that I used for about 5 years until I purchased an 02R96 in July 2003, and it is by far a much better console (the mic pre's are quite good).  And not only is the sound so much better (i.e., less metallic, if you will), but the layout of the console makes it much easier to use.  And the one feature (at least for me) that I didn't know I'd rely on as much as I do now is the ability to patch any input/output to any other input/output.  Obviously, there is a learning curve, but it's not too bad if you already have an 02R (plus Yamaha Support is pretty good).

I talked to Yamaha about the differences. The 01V96 and the DM 1000 have almost identical converters. The main difference is more I/O and better mic pre's in the DM 1000 though there is not a huge difference between the two pre's. Not to mention an extra Adat card in the DM 1000. Both are a step up with pre's, and effects compared to the older Yamaha mixers.

many thanks guys. In fact someone wanted to sell me an 02r 96 with 2 adat cards from the USA!!!.
Sometimes when I spend some  days without working with the board and sit to take a quick listen to som stuff I did, i find it slightly metallic, little bump towards 5898. any other people felt that with the older models?

Take a look at the shematic of O2R96. It has no switching between A and B inputs (XLR&TRS), they're wired in parallel. Probably the most expensive passive splitter today. Idiotic.

Also, the groups cannot be assigned to faders, only softvare controlled. Highly impractical, because you gotta use the jog to adjust the volume of a group.

I also find the older model metallic sounding. Yamaha perception of sound and what it's supposed to sound like is very strange. unuseful EQ.

We did a (absolutely not scientific) comparo of the O1V96 vs DM1000 at the Aspen Music Festival a few summers ago. Despite limitations in the setup (mic splitter to the boards so one got transformers in the chain), most felt the differences were not very significant, for what that's worth. Clearly an improvement on the older models however.

I agree with Bill's comments on the DM2000. Pretty intuitive and nice to work around with.

Dejan, did you also feel this little bump towards +/-5898?Another friend also reported it to me, very close frequency bump. And hey, my friend and I are using somewhat different gear, but the final results tend do what I have descibed.
I will probably buy an 01V96 this week and get rid of the older one, the 01V 96 OF. Hpw you guys say, nice "bang for the buck?"
The 02R 96 is still too expensive here in my "island".

No, never really gotten into that kind of detalis with it. Just felt that it annoyed me while mixing. And I mixed on it only when I had to, doing some side projects...
