Vocal Sound Help! Mp3s Incl.
« on: December 18, 2004, 04:26:02 PM »

My head is spinning from reading 5 hours worth of message board talk on mics, software ect.
I have a couple of questions. If anyone would help out, I would be VERY grateful.

Right now I want to get the best possible vocal sound I can get.
My voice:
http://www.vertomedia.com/thesongithoughtwouldgetherback.mp3
Also my voice and studio work:
http://www.purevolume.com/arvis
Style of Voice: Pop/Rock/Emo
Vocal style I want to achieve:
http://www.vertomedia.com/tbslastsummer.mp3
As you can hear, you can hear the slight crackling in his voice, the high end so present, the compression is so smooth.

My current setup (Essential equipment listed):
Isolated vocal booth with 2” foam and 4 bass traps at all corners
MXL V69ME  current mic of choice
EMU 1820
Sonar 3

Plugins used in most vocal setups:
Magneto Tube Warmth
Waves Audio Track set to -34 Threshold, 6-8 Ratio
L2 Ultramizer
Sontitus Reverb
Autotune 4

My question:

I find that the MXLV69 can be a bit too smooth, not enough bite, or top end sparkle, or IN YOUR FACE.
Now, this could be due to my:
1.   A/D converters, although I believe they are supposed to be very nice.
2.   My microphone (this is what I believe to be the weak link)
3.   Or my plugins setup (may contribute)

Now taking these things in consideration, which mic for under $500 dollars will allow me to get the sound I am looking for, or to upgrade my current sound? I was thinking EV RE20, KSM32, & AT4033. I WISH I knew what the big boys used in their setups.

If you could please let me know 1. Which mic you recommend 2. Which compressor plug in to use. Or…..
4.   ANY COMMENTS WELCOME!

Thank you SO very much.

What kind of mic pre are you using? A nice mic pre can definitely change the character of your chain, and it is in my opinion the most important element in the chain.

Don't get an RE20.
Remove the Audio-Track plugin.

My recommendations would be either an SM7 or an AT4050. AT4050 would probably work better for you though.

Try the Waves Renn compressor. A lot of people use it on vocals, and is the preferred Vocal compressor plugin.

J.Hall.
I am using the TFpro mic pre built into the 1820.
Is this a bad idea? They were marketed as nice, but I am up for suggestions. On the plugins, I will definitely go with your suggestion.
Thanks, Ben

Looking forward to more feeback...

redelephant is not me (j.hall), just to clarify.

i agree with the SM-7

for your price range there are very few options for what you are wanting.

it's the old "get what you pay for"............

mic pre.....i almost always use a neve 1272 on vocals....

i don't hardly use plug-ins so i can't answer that question.

your vocal booth might be your high end problem as well, sounds to me like you have a ton of high frequency absorbtion in there.

it's not too likely, but it could be that.

those MXL mics are hit and miss......that would be the first thing i'd toss.

you can also get some high end out of the comp, slow attack fast release......

I'm a huge SM7 fan...  you can't go wrong with one of those on your mic list.  I'd cut the vocals out of the booth.  I always prefer to cut vocals in a big room.  If I have to, I'll throw some shipping blankets up on mic stands around the singer (like make a "T" out of the stands and drap or duct tape them to the stand) to cut any bad reflections, if that's necessary.  If I can, I cut in Omni (if the mic supports it).

If you have to, take your rig outside or something and cut them outside (if it's quiet enough).

I'll usually cut this kind of vocal with a little bit of compression going in, usually LA-2A or the ISA-430.  Only a couple of dB of reduction.  Then I'll compress some more in the mix.  LA-2A, usually....  Although I'm really fond of the Quartet these days as well.

Good luck...  and as you tweak, come back and post the results.  I think you have a pretty good voice and would love to hear what you come up with.

i forgot to mention......your mp3 of you singing....some good compression, well placed EQ, and a nice verb would get the job done just fine.

the example you posted of what you want......that vocal was cut in a room that had a high frequency tone going......you can totally hear the gate or edits happen as a 12 or more likely 15k (TV tube) tone comes and goes as the vocal comes and goes.

dsynthuhsize . . .

Check this link and tell me if you like the vocal tone.
If so I'll tell you exactly what was used. (inexpensive mic)
