I, too, have heard rumors about Amek being in "ill health", but they are JUST rumors. Maybe Neve and/or SSL are up to dirty tricks. <g>
From experience with several Amek desks ranging from the small TAC line up through the 9898i, there isn't much in there that is really proprietary. I would say that the pots are probably the most unique parts since the selection of "off the shelf" pots is somewhat limited these days. Other things like chips, capacitors, and even switches can be easily sourced if you look around. The "usual suspects" such as Mouser, Digikey, Allied, etc. stock most of the parts you will need for service.
As for the "scary DOS" computer...heheheh. My 1st computer was a Compaq "portable" which looked more like a portable sewing machine than a computer. That was in 1982 or 84 or some such. DOS computers and applications tend to be a LOT more stable than any of the newer stuff (PC or Apple) for a "control function" like desk automation. However, the interface from the PC to the desk *might* be an issue because of the different types of plug-in cards used "then" versus "now.
