Amek !?@#$
« on: October 11, 2004, 08:33:36 PM »

this is my first post but regardless.....

i co-run /maintain a smaller studio outside austin, tx that recently installed an amek classic series console.  the board is in good shape and sounds great!
(a few minor things switches bad, stripped hardware, etc..)
and was wondering if anyone new a good resource for spare parts and the sort....a stash per-se of goodies?
...amek support is not soo helpful

i recently heard amek is being folded by thier gracious parent harmon international?

oh yeah it has gml automation version 6.0 circa 1994 im scared to deal with the ancient MS_DOS "monster" computer any advise....?

I, too, have heard rumors about Amek being in "ill health", but they are JUST rumors.  Maybe Neve and/or SSL are up to dirty tricks.  <g>

From experience with several Amek desks ranging from the small TAC line up through the 9898i, there isn't much in there that is really proprietary.  I would say that the pots are probably the most unique parts since the selection of "off the shelf" pots is somewhat limited these days.  Other things like chips, capacitors, and even switches can be easily sourced if you look around.  The "usual suspects" such as Mouser, Digikey, Allied, etc. stock most of the parts you will need for service.

As for the "scary DOS" computer...heheheh.  My 1st computer was a Compaq "portable" which looked more like a portable sewing machine than a computer.  That was in 1982 or 84 or some such.  DOS computers and applications tend to be a LOT more stable than any of the newer stuff (PC or Apple) for a "control function" like desk automation.  However, the interface from the PC to the desk *might* be an issue because of the different types of plug-in cards used "then" versus "now.

Hi cryptech,

The BEST place I have found for my replacement AMEK parts is at Audio Maintenance Limited. Its run by the ex-AMEK UK Tech Support Manager.

They are "across the pond" in the UK...but they ship to the USA and take credit cards.

Plus they have a ton of good support info they freely share...overall great guys to deal with!

Here's their website: http://www.audiomaintenance.com/home.htm

Hope this helps!

Regards,
TJ

What do you mean 'rumors'?

Amek are no more!

Sad but true.  Anyone got a 9098i they want to get rid of cheap?

GML Automation never ran under MS-DOS... you either have an Idris computer or you have Flying Faders.

Frank Rodriguez at (818)920-3279 his email is frodrigu@harman.com

He may be able to help you... he is the guy to go to for studer parts, and supposedly Amek too, otherwise he can probably point you in the right direction.

As Rail said, GML never ran on DOS.

If it is GML, you have an IDRIS (UNIX) workstation, or a Mac, and the fader panels are marked GML. If it is Flying Faders, you have a DOS workstation, and the fader panels are marked with the Neve and Martinsound logos.
