XP SP2 ok?
« on: October 13, 2004, 09:54:45 AM »

Ahas anyone here running Samp/Sequoia with RME cards updated XP with service pack 2 yet? I'm sure it's a more solid OS, but am wary of changing my current setup...

Brad, SP2 makes my browser hang big time, even with the pop-up stuff turned off. As for audio, I have not installed it as my main audio computer does not entertain the thought of going "on line". Most Windows upgrades are for web purposes anyway, security. If you use the same system for audio as you do for the web, I would hold off on SP2 until Microshaft gets the kinks worked out of SP2. So far I say, I would not do it yet.

I do use my workstation that goes on line for editing and sample mastering. Even though it is very powerful, so far I have seen a speed reduction since SP2 was installed. I have had more crashes (files being diverted to temp files) since SP2. I would hold off.

These are simply my experiences.

Any others?

I believe SP2 will cause severe problems for people using Firewire audio interfaces -
check out http://www.rme-audio.com/english/techinfo/fw800sp2.htm for more info on this issue.  Other than that I think you should be ok.

I'm still using Win2ksp4 for my DAW's - I like less bells and whistles on my audio only machines, find XP's activation scheme repugnant, and I've found absolutely no improvements in audio performance when testing using a dual boot Win2k/XP on the same exact hardware.  ommv
