I am looking for a setup for a video camera similar to this:

He is using a Shure FP24 mic pre (around $600+).  I think it has built-in limiting & phantom power.  Not sure if this runs on batteries, or what, since it is a "field" unit (IOW can't be tethered to a wall plug).  The mic is an Oktava MC-012 I think.

So, are there any other options for the mic pre?  I know that BeachTek makes some, but I wonder about their quality since I've never heard of them...  It would have to be a 2 channel mic pre.

What about for a similar sm. diaphragm condensor.  The more directional the better, but I don't want a big long "boom" mic.  His Oktavas are a nice size, but I think they run around $200 ea.  I was hoping for something nice that was a bit cheaper.

Suggestions?

Try http://www.soundprofessionals.com. They have a lot of portable recording equipment at good prices.

Also, check out Studio Projects C4 mics. They are going for about $320 a pair on Ebay (new). They are great mics.

You can also check with Core Sound (http://www.core-sound.com) who sells small portable preamps. Most of them are stereo though. Do you want to record in mono? I saw only one Oktava mic in the picture you referenced.

Another possibility at a reasonable price is a Samson 4 channel mixer (Mixpad 4). It runs on batteries, provides phantom power, and has 2 preamp channels. I have used it with a pair of SP C4 mics to record a concert band, and was very pleased with the results. It is around $100.

I also have a Denecke AD-20 digital preamp that I use with an optical connection to my minidisc recorder. I have been using a Rode NT4 mic with it and have been satisfied with the results there as well.

On Ebay, there is an AD-20 with lots of accessories and a pair of SP C4 mics at this auction:

Thanks for the info.  The C4s are not as directional as I would like.  Those Oktavas can be used as hypercardoid, whihc is great.  Unfortunately the MXL 603s are also not switchable to hypercardoid.  

The AD-20 only outputs digital, and I need analog output.

I didn't see anything that matched my needs at core sound either.  

The Samson Mix pad looks pretty cool, but I would like to be able to mount it to the camera, and that is not really possible w/ the mixpad.

And yes, I am looking for stereo.  I guess that guy is doing voice work (docuentaries, interviews, or whatever).

The search goes on...
