Need to rent a rig
« on: October 01, 2004, 10:21:30 AM »

A full live concert video is to be shot at my space in the very near future. I need to record everything including rehearsals to Pro Tools with a safety backup to either stand alone hard disc recorders or, god forbid, ADATs or DA 88s.

Though I have a complete studio, I mostly work still on 2" and I am only using PT LE for mixes and editing.

Anyone have a good source to rent a HD or Mix Plus system in the Midwest? I need the whole rig including a computer with tons of storage capability, but not an entire mobile truck.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I will need to record at least 24 tracks simultaneously, possibly more; I haven't yet seen the input list. I will be sent a split from the live sound rig plus possibly some additional room mics. I should be able to use my board and external preamps to interface to the computer, so I will need A/D conversion for all channels. XLR input would be convenient cause I could just use my snake that goes to my 2" machine.

I will need to be able send a stereo feed to the video truck and also will have to send all the inputs to the safety recorder, hopefully a 24 track hard disc unit.

My concern is just to track everything as clean as possible; it will be mixed to 5.1 for the DVD at a later date.

Load in is Oct 10, shoot is Oct 12.

well, that just ruled out my rig.

what about a radar?

maybe give IZ a call and see if they will rent you something direct from the factory.

there has to be some PT rental rigs in chi-town.

in fact, i know CRC has a pretty big one for rent, in a road case ready to go.

Too bad j., it would be fun to have you in town for this show. The band are also great fans of the local microbrew.

Radar may be feasible for the backup system but the producer wants the main deal done in PT.

CRC sounds good; who's your buddy over there?

I've been looking at Dreamhire out of Nashville but it would nicer to find something closer. I've so far struck out in Minneapolis.

Dennis Tousana at CRC.

he'll at least be a good starting point for info, but he's just a staff engineer and most likely won't handle the whole deal.

if you could find another 192 I/O or even a 96 I/O then my rig could easily pull off the tracking.

i only have 16 ins and 24 outs.

HD2 will be more then enough to simply track a live show.

an external drive will be required with my rig, and the I/O is all on D-subs.

which i have some short D-sub to 90 pin Edacs (for my patch bays) but that won't help much.

my mac G5 has 1.5 gig of ram and i'm sure it would be stable enough to handle a long record time.

so, if you can swing the extra I/O, i'm not against helping out.

be a pain in the ass getting up there.....but you know me.....i'll do it anyway.

Just looked at CRC's site and they may have just what I need. I'll give them a call and let you know if I need any more help.

Thanks again!
