The biggest problem I have with the Oktava products is their tendencies toward uneven quality control, unless you get them from a reliable source.

I just spotted the beyerdynamic m160 and m260 at reasonable distance (say a 3 hour drive... Rolling Eyes ) ..

Let's not forget that Bonzo on "When the Levee Breaks" was recorded with ONE M160!!!

I have and use a M260. It's my anti - sibilant secret weapon. The M500 is a hand held vocal version of this mic. It has the usual HF peek and LF cut. I have used it on woodwinds with much success. On one occasion, It was A/B ed with a Sony C-37, a fav. On woodwinds, and we went with the Beyer.

Thomann, a German shop, had a batch of ribbon mics made in China, see http://www.netzmarkt.de/thomann/thoiw2_artikel-172090.html - the other condensor types they make aren't exactly stellar, but I'm going to give the ribbon a chance. They are 129.- EUR (ca. 170.- USD incl. VAT). I'll be happy to report my findings.

Best regards,
Ralf

I tried an Oktava ML-52 a year ago or so and was quite under-whelmed. It could be as Harvey points out due to just a bad mic considering Oktava's QC issues, but it really left a bad taste in my mouth.

I borrowed it from a friend who loved it...go figure!

It is probably worth the extra cash to pony up for an AEA or Royer...

BTW...How did that Nady work out Harvey???

I didn't have time to see Wes Dooley when I went to L.A., so I still haven't heard one.  I'll call Wes and see if I can borrow it next week, or at least get his impressions.

Yeah Thomann is ok. Never spotted the ribbon T-bone, used a condensor form them once (not stellar, but very decent..) Lemme know if it works for you!

Another vote for the M500, it's got that "solidity" if that makes sense, but a bigger vote for getting an old Oktava
ML-19, "God's Golden Telephone" IMHO.

Loving ribbons more and more, in direct proportion to hating hyped sound more and more I guess...

I've been using my M500 with John Hardy M1 for a while and was very very very impressed. Used mostly on woodwinds instruments and vocals. Last week got a CIB. You won't believe the difference. The best combo I ever had the pleasure to work with. A marriage made in heaven. That damn sheen and glow thing is impressive, with this mic it's even more.

Just a thought.

In this month's TapeOp, there is a DIY article about modifying an Oktava ML52 to improve its sound quality...Hmmmm...interesting.

Too funny that I just registered on this forum and low and behold - my tiny little article has popped up.

A big vote for the ML52 (obviously). With the mods, it's a very good mic indeed. I use it often on guitar amps, and sometimes on drums.

For what it's worth, I've heard just as much variation between one 77 and the next as I have between ML52s. The best 77 still wipes out an Oktava, but as with any microphone, it depends on the application. There's no such thing as a useless mic, only a useless engineer.

Hi Bobro,
a CIB is an Amek Channel In a Box, a complete channel strip designed by Rupert Neve. Mic/Line preamp, EQ, filters, Compressor. Fantastic sounding piece of outboard. My ribbon microphones never sounded so good. Bought it from Funky Junk Italy.

Cheers.

Has anyone tried the Nady ribbon yet?  I'm very curious.
