EC92/6AB4 tubes for Neumann/Gefell UM57/CMV563
« on: November 15, 2023, 03:42:09 PM »

Hello All,
Wondering if anybody has a good source for EC92/ 6AB4 tubes? Everything I've been getting lately is too noisy or has intermittent issues :'(

Or if anyone has some "tested for mic use" tubes available I'd be interested.

When noise is so persistent, sometimes it’s worth investigating cleaning the tube socket and/or pins with some Red Caig Deoxit, making sure to clean up excess after application and fitting a tube in and out of the socket a few times. I would also investigate whether the mic's output jack and cable are fully clean.

You can usually try searching for German sellers on eBay or at “eBay dot de” for EC92, then making sure they ship where you are. Some of the longtime sellers will have tested tubes, though usually not actually tested in mics.

Thanks for the response gtoledo3
The mic has been serviced and is in great shape. I also have a reference tube that I use to compare replacement tubes.

I'll look through German eBay again, but I've gone through so many batches of tubes that I'm getting desperate :(

This is not typical, most tubes I acquired at Ebay worked, not necessary perfect, but quite well.

If no tube works satisfactorily, something else may be wrong inside your mic: broken caps can be quite noisy, e.g.
