Choices for competent condenser mic specialists are diminishing with every year.
Those who had built a solid reputation over time have droppd from the scene like flies from a closed window, for reasons that are either connected or aligning randomly.
Premature death, cancer, alcoholism, mental instability or a combination have robbed the microphone community of at least five of the most respected and knowledgeable veterans in our field in the last decade or two.
And I see no new superstars (or even super-starts) on the horizon.
Why that is so is speculative, but my hypothesis: we just don't make the kind of money like someone with a good analytical mind and ability for deep focus could pull in these days from a job in the digital industry. I.e., it would take a passion for good sounds as primary motivation to get into a field of work and stick with it until you are rally good that's about as lucrative as a senior waiter in a decent restaurant would earn.
But I am open to hear what others are experiencing.

I have moved on from my "shoeshine boy-to the-stars" position in the basement to a location a few floors up (it's even carpeted!): I am now exclusively concentrating on making very good microphones sound spectacular.
