Gudeman caps M49 C5
« on: January 30, 2021, 02:01:05 AM »

I wondered, are Gudeman 1 microfarad/160V? caps as well regarded as the Bosch or Seimens/Halske?

Would I hear a difference if I swapped out the Gudeman in my M49b?

Was this an original part?

What are the preferred current manufacture PIO's for coupling caps,or is it preferable (soundwise, not for authenticity/resale) to hunt down the originals?

I cannot comment on the audibility of capacitor differences, except with the really bad ceramic ones that are not suited for audio anyway.

I can measure capacitor distortions down to -155 dB, and there are very few that are below this line.
Paper/oil types (the ones that are relevant for this posting) have distortions widespread in the range around -120 dB.

Every type and model of capacitor is different, and there are large unit to unit variations within a batch of the same model.

When historic mics where built, the manufacturers chose what was available and suited for the job.
Had their choice been a “lucky punch” or doesn’t it matter?

Please share with forum readers those capacitor types and brands that are at the lower end of distortion and how using them would affect performance.
Thanks!

Of course one can question how important distortion below -120 dB (0.0001%) is...

Any thoughts on the original questions?
If you are restoring an M49 what cap do you choose?
Is the Gudeman likely original?

So Kai, can you hear distortion products at -120 in the presence of signal? Thems some super ears!
