Neumann ELA MZ 031/2 capsule info
« on: June 18, 2023, 03:50:18 AM »

Could someone please tell me about this capsule? Is it an M7? I can find ELA MZ 032/2 but not 031, are they different? Thanks Marcus

Hi, I have an MZ 032/2 and it's an M7 from before the war.  But I've never seen an 031/2 either.   Curious to find out...  Good luck,

I believe it is a version of the figure-8 capsule which Neumann internally called "CM 7" and which the "brown books" of German broadcasting called "M 8"--a single-diaphragm, large-diaphragm design with a frequency range up to maybe 8 kHz.

But I don't have any Telefunken "ELA Sammelliste" or ELA price list showing a "/2" version of it. In the July, 1939 "ELA Sammelliste" the figure-8 capsule's designation was still "Ela MZ 031/1" while the other two in the series (the Ela MZ 026 and Ela MZ 032) had apparently just advanced from /1 to /2 since the previous year (relying on a different Telefunken publication). If "Ela MZ 031/2" was an official version then it must have been introduced during the war.

The product is listed in the comprehensive spreadsheet of Neumann mics and capsules that has been presented by Neumann representatives on this forum and elsewhere. I was able to quickly find a link to it here, and note that it is listed on the first page.

That version of Neumann's table is 20+ years out of date. The current version shows MZ 031/1 instead. (Of course I checked there!)

However, I think that both are very likely correct for different years at Telefunken.
