Neumann M 49: Is this a fake?
« on: October 22, 2019, 01:12:34 PM »

Hallo everybody,
i was offered this mic and the circumstances all sound very mysterious and too good-story-like ("mic comes from an old man who took care for 50 years etc.").
Unfortunately i'm not a super expert so i ask the community here:
Is this real or is it a fake?
Greetings from Munich!

Mic looks very chromey!
That, and the two slot screws on the back would make me suspicious, too.

But substantial info about this mic (and its aftermarket power supply) can only be had by a further look inside: amp and capsule type will tell how much of this, if any, is genuine Neumann.

Thank you very much, Klaus! This reinforced my initial suspicion....

No, I don't think that this mic is a fake, or that its guts are not genuine M49. The components certainly are period-correct for a first-generation M49.
That fact was established when the owner lifted the hood and shared its innards on GS. But that information was not available at the time "halsalarm" posted here, last fall.

But the authenticity of its finish and its serial number plate remains an opinion that no one has authoritatively confirmed as fact at this point.
What raises my suspicion: finish looks unblemished, and serial number plate looks new, while the mic's bottom bell is well worn. These things usually don't go together.

Yes, I had also been wondering if it had been replated at any point.
